Jimmy Carr is my absolute favourite stand-up I've ever seen live, although avoid if you can't stomach jokes about pedophiles.
Also recommend Frankie Boyle, Jason Manford, Russell Howard, and for a more family-friendly take on things, Michael McIntyre.

Ignore these two handbag waving whippersnappers, saw him in the Manchester Arena last month and whilst there's nothing edgy about his comedy, he was brilliant.

Billy Connelly is my favourite though alot of people don't seem to get it or don't like his style of just talking about stuff rather than purely scripted jokes.
Bill Bailey is good but has a habit of using old material.
Dylan Moran is very good, could play down the drunk thing a bit though.
Jimmy Carr and Russell Brand can both die a fire.

I'll second the following - Bailey, Izzard, Mcintyre and Carr. All very different from each other but all amusing.
Iggles, can you find me an Al Murray clip that is funny? I've seen this guy on TV and I've found him pretty dull. Prove me wrong.

Well if you don't like his schtick then I don't think I'm ever going to change your mind. Search on Youtube if you really want to give him a chance

Dara O'Briain and Russell Howard are my favourites by a long shot as I prefer the 'story' comedy, rather than Jimmy Carr's one-liners. But I do like him and McIntyre too, as well as Ed Byrne & Lewis Black.
Dara O'Brian does a lot of (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIaV8swc-fo) stuff about science etc as he studied Theoretical Physics at University (a fact I recently discovered listening to him being interviewed at (
http://www.tamlondon.org/) TAM London in October).

Another vote for Hedberg. Also David Cross.
I find I like Jim Gaffigan a good bit too.
Old Eddy Murphy is pretty funny, and Sinbad.
Despite a kind of meh show, Dave Chapelle can be good standup.
Sam Kinison is good in his own way. Kind of abrasive to the ears some of the time, and you dont always want to laugh but you probably will.
Robin Williams standup is "good" if you don't mind being temporarily insane sometimes.
