Hey all,
long time no see. I've dropped back into gaming (I do this every five years or so) and the time has come to upgrade my 9800 GT. (I was thinking about a 650 Ti.) I have an HP machine that isn't very roomy and only has a 460 W PSU. I didn't upgrade my GPU previously, because it would have involved getting a better PSU and maybe a bigger case. But now I see this 650 Ti that's really small and low on power. So before I put down the cash for it, I'd love to get a little guidance from the folks at TTLG. Am I correct in thinking there will be no space/power problems? No PCI incompatibilities? What about any bottlenecks? Is this thing the best value for money?
Cheers all.
Here is my HP PC:

You have pretty much done most of the homework here, the 650 as over 6X the amount of cores, and has the same 1xPCI-e power connect and draws 1/3 less power.
The only issue you might have, is the 9800 GT a single or dual slot card? as the GTX650 is a dual slow etc. Is thre room for a dual slow, as in enough air/space around it etc.
Also there are cheaper GTX650's on egg, try and get one with as long a warranty as possible etc.

Yes and no, on average the 7850 is 20% for 20% in price depending on the game. The 7850 TDP is more than that of the 650Ti and the 7850 is physically much larger than the 650.

Thanks for the replies.
I remember when you gave me some advice a few years ago, Bikerdude.
It would be nice to get a 7850, but I think that would be above the capability of my PSU.
In my HP, I've got a PCI-E x16 slot on the bottom (with my 9800 GT in it), then an empty PCI-E slot above it, and then an occupied PCI-E slot above that.
Can someone tell me where the 650 Ti actually connects to a PCI-E x16 slot? In the picture on the newegg page, is this located on the side where the bronze panel is, and to the left of where it says "EVGA", in the corner?

yeah, the thin part with the shiny golden stripes goes into the slot. better get someone to help if you are unsure about removing your old vga and installing the new one - cases of inexperienced users pulling out entire slots from their motherboards are not unheard of.

Thank you. I'm pretty sure, now, that it'll fit fine.
There is a 2 GB version of this card for marginally cheaper. How big of a difference would that make compared to 1 GB? I'm guessing the main drawback of this card is its 128-bit memory interface.

This only has an effect at resolutions above 1680*1050 in the latest games..

2GB of memory are almost useless for this type of card.

Hey, in you guys' experience, does Newegg cut prices much on or around Boxing Day?
I'm waiting for Boxing Day to see if that card goes on sale. Am I likely waiting in vain?
