How much "something along the lines of X or Y" should it be over "Long, droning"?
Because there are several Ambient tracks that match the latter, yet not the former ;) (Example: (

(how do I call it guitar wank without being mean)
You don't, because it's not prog.
Sunn O))) are really meant to be seen live. It's not so much the sound itself as what it does to you. Sunn O))) live shows are an interesting sight because it's as much a physical experience as it is an audio experience. There is so much bass flying around that there is anecdotal evidence of people vomiting, or creaming their pants- that is how much the place is vibrating. You don't hear it so much as feel it. Time Machines are tame compared to this shit.

Got through the better half of what was posted as of last night...last night. Liked pretty much all of it, great suggestions all (particularly dethtoll's, I think, I cant remember who recommended what). Will work on the rest tonight.

Im not 100% sure what you are asking, Im not really in for ambient stuff exactly, I prefer something with a reasonable beat and some melody, it just goes off on it for a long time. I'll give anything a try, but check out some of the other things posted as they pretty much nailed it.

Yeah that's what they say, but according to an interview I just read, the
reason they say that is because they figure most people don't have a good enough stereo to listen to their music at the appropriate volume. Well, I think mine's okay so I wonder if I could just crank it and not worry about the fact that they never ever come here...

For my part, it was Earth, Sunn O))) (yes there's a relation), Om, Callisto (which isn't really in the same category as the rest of the stuff here, but the specific song fit your criteria), Ulver (same deal.)
Suggestions by other people included old Katatonia (as opposed to new Katatonia), Sleep and High on Fire.
Glad you like it.

Mine's not too bad either, and yeah I really wish I could go see them live. I'm trying to get a friend of mine who lives in San Fran to go see one of their shows August 8th in my stead. She prefers trashy Eurodance so I told her in exchange I'd listen to DJ Prolapse or whatever it is that she likes until I kill myself.

Ah, I thought the Katatonia was you too. It was one of my fav's, that and the Ulver (and I've not gotten through it all yet).
