What exactly happens to the hacker when he logs into a cyberspace terminal? Does his body "de-rez" like in the movie Tron, or does time in the real world move much slower than in cyberspace? Otherwise, during the final cyberspace run, wouldn't his body deteriorate from the X-ray radiation in Shodan's fortress? If there are still elite bots roaming in the room, wouldn't they continue to open fire on the hacker as well? What are your thoughts?

I would imagine your mental state is accellerated, making the outside world appear as if it is standing still.

In other words, it happens so quickly that virtually the instant he puts his head to the jack, it's over.

Or to explain this for the younger generation of System Shock fans: You jack off the moment you started cybering.

I would disagree that the a cyberspace session is instantaneous. It's still a human brain making the interface. There's no de-materialization. You're just standing there with the interface pads on you skull, pressed against the cyberjack, vulnerable to physical attack.

Consider how pissed off players would get from being killed by wandering monsters while in cyberspace. Sometimes, the game fiction has to take a back seat to game play.

It would totally suck if you didn't know how to get out, and someone deleted the cyberspace exit module, leaving you in freespace until someone logged you out manually. Unless it is something like the Matrix where you have your conscience uploaded into the system, and it needs to be downloaded before you can properly be removed from cyberspace. Although our hacker managed to do it after the showdown with SHODAN.

I don't think it's unreasonable to assume the brain works fast enough to make the experience last on the order of seconds.... the fact that a brain is sub-consciously controlling respiration, balance, taking input from all your senses and controlling all the chemical reactions in the body, all the while doing calculus in your conscious parts, preserves the suspension of disbelief. How much can happen in the real world in a few seconds if you make sure you are "relatively safe" when you enter?

No. No no no no no no no no nononononononono.
Read Neuromancer. That's what SS1's cyberspace is modeled after.

That depends on whether or not you are standing in an area filled with deadly radiation or not.
I always assumed that, since I'd killed everyone in the area, my body was just "safe" so it didn't matter, but the ending scene in the deadly radiation always jarred my suspension of disbelief.
