Lockups while playing. - by Cyanite

Hello there.
I've been browsing quite a lot of forums looking for an answer to the problem I have that's keeping me from playing System Shock 2.
I've installed the game, no problems.
Started the game, no problems. (The intro movie shows too)
Played the game, longest I've managed to play is about 4 minutes I guess.
What happens is: The game just freezes up and repeats about 1 second of sound over and over.
It happens at complete random moments, mostly in one of the training rooms.
I've checked most problems and can't find any that are similar to mine.
My specs are:
windows XP home edition
2x 512mb ram.
prescott 3.0ghz PIV
Nvidia GeForce 6800 GE (which equals a 6800 vanilla)
On board sound card
Any help would be much appreciated.

The first post of the big FAQ thread about running SS2 on WinXP explains this nicely, check out the 1st post, the dualcore/hypethreading section. :)

When your in the menu of the game, you have to press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, then go to your "Processes" tab, right click "SHOCK2.exe", go to "Set Affinity" (In some computers it's "Set Connection"), and there should be 2 CPUs, disable the 2nd one, click ok, exit task manager, and go back to your game.
There! No more freezing.
I had the same problem, and it took me forever to figure it out, problem is: You have to do this every time you start up SS2, not that much of an in-convenience, takes like 30 seconds..

He doesn't have to, it ain't very difficult to make the change permament. And there are two simple ways, like using the EXE that you can download from Ninjit Turak's FAQ thread, or download ImageCfg and edit the Shock2.exe Windows header to disable CPU1.
Simple and effective. :)

Purcahse some canned air, pop off the case, spray the dust off your parts, re-attach case.
It fixed damn near every random lockup i've been having with SS2.

In that case you were probably experiencing over-heating problems, better not fry your hardware if it can be avoided. :eww:

Over heating problems? Wen I left a CD in the drive for more then 10 minuets it was HOT. Not warm, not mildy heated.. These things were toasty.

Wouldn't it suck if it was so hot that the disc would start to melt? :p

Such a fate befell my original Diablo CD.
Thank god I was one of the three people in the world to buy Hellfire.
