If you've seen either
Donnie Darko or
Primer and didn't really get it, then (
http://www.tenthdimension.com/flash2.php) watch this very cool discussion of dimensionality, string theory, and so on.
I think this is very cool. I once watched a doc on string theory, which got most of the way towards describing this, but it went a bit more indepth in the 3rd and 4th dimensions so it didn't get as far.
I follow this discussion, but find the theoretical link between the multiple timelines and the multiple universes as distinct universes a bit weak ... of course, there's not a whole lot of theory presented here and I suppose there's a whole load of technobabble that people
could produce to try to make sense of it. I suppose it's just a cognitive barrier to this particular facet of the theory.
Either way, it's a great little discussion.

Yeah I saw The Elegant Universe documentary and it was pretty interesting. 10 dimensions, that's cool, but can we ever picture them?

HAHAHAHA, everyone knows there are only 5 dimensions...

Yes, I remember watching Brian Greene's show on it. One particularly striking part I remember is when they introduced M-Theory and said, actually, there are 11 dimensions in one string theory, but one of them can be just looped around so tightly around that it's just like 10 dimensions for the others ... so the universe is actually 10 or 11 dimensions depending on how you look at it.

I thought all that talk of "dimensions" was just absurdly mathematical; you can invent as many as you want, theorectically.

God, the Elegant Universe documentary got so  at times.

Well I can't get onto the linked page, but I'm assuming it's the same thing as the "Imagining the 10 dimensions" part of (
http://www.tenthdimension.com/flash2.php) This?
I agree more theory is needed from people who know what they're talking about if this is going to be taken seriously, instead of just some scientist guys going "I don't like thinking I have no free will, so I'll say that my actions change the probabilistic natures of the state of particle dynamics" :erm: or something.
And the Elegant Universe documentary - was that the one which talked about the multiverse with universes colliding or some such? (I saw it years ago, I'm hazy on it)

It's almost like the Kaballah being explained from a scientific standpoint.

You could, but the theory seems to simplify the process. Like say you're sitting at point A, and you have point B, C, and D as being potential futures. Instead of saying that B,C, and D are seperate dimensions, this theory just states that all of those potentialities are a representation of your 5th dimensional self.

Although I found the multiple infinities and universes to be an extension of the fifth dimension, I doubt that you could continually invent any more upward-facing dimensions from our knowledge of "reality" - of course, it would be possible to create almost infinitely many dimensions that probe deeper than the single point, if you took that single point to be a person.

So what's this 5th dimension everyone is talking about?(without going into string/M theory) There's 3 spacial where we live, 1 of time, what's the 5th?
