Live Earth . . Did anyone see any of it? - by nickie

OK so UK has ground to a halt. IMHO (although I admit I was Thiefing it up today and didn't see all of it) it was the drabbest thing I've seen in years until Foo Fighters came on. In terms of performance, they knocked the pants off everyone else. We finished up with Madonna. Whatever you think of the music, she is as professional as they come. An immensely slic act, maybe a little busy for my taste but I do admire her. A personal highlight though and a subject dear to some of our hearts, Crowded House finishing up in Syney with Weather With You :)
And cynicism aside, will any message get through more than it has done already. I mean, it may have started out as econimical, but my mother (yeah she always pops up somehow) has turned off plugs at the switches for years. And her electricity bill is miniscule. The generation that always economizes. And I may follow her example also for economic reasons but damned if I can get anyone else to.
And so on (in 10 mins) to New York. I sincerely hope yours is better than ours.

God it was awful.
"Well obviously it would be impractical for me not to fly everywhere in my private jet because I'm an important international pop star, but you little people should catch the bus" doesn't cut it, and neither did a bunch of self serving TV presenters too timid of losing popularity amongst the Daily Mail reading automatons to point out that a cut of CO2 emissions by about 90% any time now is actually about what's needed to prevent run-away catastrophic climate change. Crowded house are sweet though, bless 'em.
I'd wager that 'the message' hasn't even started to scratch the surface.

People (obviously) don't like to make changes to their lifestyle, unless those changes are perceived as improving it. People won't start driving less and using less electricity till they absolutely have to - and by the time they absolutely have to, it will be too late. I'm not saying we're all gonna die or anything, but the die that there is still time to emerge unscathed is wishful thinking. There WILL be environmental catastrophe, many species will go extinct, etc. - the question is how much, how many, and (from a more selfish perspective) how will human society salvage itself.

I'm following Sheryl Crow's example and only use 2 squares of toilet paper per poop.
My ass STINKS, but it's environmentally friendly.

funny, I was thinking the exact same thing today while jogging. I guess not running into 1 non-suv or non-fullsizepickup had me thinking. I guess it just pisses me off that everyone is freaking out about the environment but no one wants to give up their SUV's for it. I guess it's always the other guy's fault:p NOW TURN OFF THAT GODDAMNED LIGHT FETT:mad:

I read about her comment, as well as her interaction with Rove, and I thought initially that it was awkward. I still think it's awkward, but at least now I know who's on spinach and corn diet.
(edit) I think she meant to raise awareness, although forcing people to visualize bathroom business is probably not the first approach I'd have taken. Whatever. It's said, and that's that, I guess.

Fuck you, planet-hater. I use 2 leaves. And then plant a tree to make up for it./

But I trust you're using recycled, white (or rather grey), loo roll rather than coloured. :cheeky:
I understand there have been various promises by various governments to cut emissions by 60% by 2050. I won't be around then but my children may be and their children if they have them almost certainly will be. And as I really don't want them cursing me more than they do already (:D ) I'll carry on switching off at the wall.
Well I fell asleep in the end but heard some decent highlights whilst doing so. Think a few more heavyweights might have helped the process. Result: best bits were the pictures in the closing credits. Absolutely beautiful. And perhaps that said more than everything else put together.

Madonna playing guitar and getting feedback from the amp was the most hilarious thing I've seen this year.
