That's the problem, half of the time it's Interenet Explorer:p
I think it was Windows 2000 or Windows ME that I distinctly remember being really good at identifying a hung process. Sometimes i would think a process would be hung and would bring up the task manager just to see that it was still responding. Sure enough I'd wait a few seconds and it would return. I just don't see this ever anymore, at least not since Windows XP came along.

@Yakoob: Did you see number 6? Some Linux distributors also make terrible UI design decisions too. Don't forget about that one distro moving the window controls to the left and re-organizing them "just because". Luckily, I got in the habbit of using alt+f4 to close windows forever ago, so that one didn't bug me too much.

I don't like those programs that don't actually close, they just pretend and leave an icon in the systray. And of course those programs that, by default, load on startup so that they can nag about updates.
Hiding file extensions is understandable. If someone renamed a file and accidentally changed the extension, they might not realise their mistake and then they'd be wondering why the thing won't open any more.

Do you by any chance write software, lost_soul?

But man! All the stuff you're complaining about can be changed with just a couple of clicks!
Windows taking too long to time out? Just about any Windows tweaker can set that straight. I have mine set for 5 seconds, and it's GLORIOUS!
Hate Ubuntu copping OSXs stupid ass buttons on the left side? Go to the Software Center, type Ubuntu Tweak, click install, wait 5 seconds, load it up, click Gnome Tweaks, and switch it to the right side. And as with all Linux apps, there's a probably terminal command that does the same thing. STUPENDOUS!
Think those fat borders in Aero are kinda stupid dumb? I do too. Good thing you can change them. Right click, select personalize, hit window color, advanced settings, and under the item drop down menu, select border padding. Set it to 1. SPECTACULAR!
Okay, I agree with you about the Windows shutdown thing, as I do about the notification popups. Though the notifications are not nearly as bad in Windows as they are in Ubuntu. UNPRECEDENTED!
Hidden file type extensions? Like has been said before, most people won't need to have them displayed. And for those that do, the option to turn them on is 3 clicks away. Once it's on, it's on forever. SCRUMPTIOUS!
I don't understand why you're griping about half this stuff. 99% of it can be changed so easily, in the amount of time it took you to kick off this thread, you could've had everything set the way you wanted 3 times over.

Sometimes you're on someone else's computer or you just had to reinstall and you notice all these little annoyances stopping you from downloading porn productively. I assume lost_soul knows all those tweaks because he must have used them once to be able to rant about them not being default settings.
Renzatic on 27/12/2010 at 02:08
Downloading porn has always been a stop and go experience for me.

Some of these criticisms are actually paradigm breaking. The #1 problem to me is when there is a major paradigm shift in the way an applications is designed, but, while paradigms are legit, here's an example:
Quote:
5. Do not assume you know what the user wants to do. If I create a text file called hello.cfg, do NOT rename it to hello.cfg.txt!
If the "File Type" is set to txt, then you should expect the file to be saved as txt. I assume this criticism is largely targeted at applications like Notepad... this type of application is expected to handle txt files first and foremost. I do think you should have some option to choose the default file type when saving documents, but I think it is perfectly reasonable to expect a .txt extension to be added *if* the application indicates it expects to save it as a txt file.
Just one nitpick... I do agree with some of these criticisms, however. Changing shortcut keys is the worst in my book as I'm predominantly a keyboard guy due to the fact that it gets the job done faster.

It's usually one shot for me.
