If somebody want to buy cedega to play SS2 - forget it. Cedega does not support System Shock 2 and System Shock 2 won't run on Cedega. Sad, but true. In my opinion wine has better compatibility and run more apps at the moment. And.. wine is for free. Or, if you're looking for proffesional wine solutions, try Crossover. (

Wine has far better DX9 support than Cedega. The thing is Cedega implements some "hacks" to get better performance on some games, which comes handy if you just want to play one of those supported games, but obviously that only works for said games.
Surprisingly, I've had more luck running SS2 on linux than on winXP. I found a fair share of problems running it on wine, but it just didn't even run on windows no matter how many patches I throwed at it.

On the "linux sucks and is unstable" front, you could probably blame X.org and bad driver support for most of that. The just plain Linux part of it all is probably just about flawless. It's just kinda useless to most people without something like X.org, KDE, Gnome, all that stuff, which is where the problems come in.

Linux is a hundread time more stable than windows. The problem with gaming is that most of the time we are trying to run games designed for windows. Microsoft doesn't support linux so implementations of Direct X and other microsoft technologies are based on hacking the windows code or emulating an entire machine. There isn't a chance in hell that it will be completely stable.
Try playing games like Unreal Tournament 2004 that have a linux native version. The XP version has crashed on me hundreads of times more than the Linux. It is slower (FPS) on linux but thats due to the lack of support from the hardware manufacturers.
Technologies like wine are brilliant, just don't expect windows like performance.

I run Deus Ex on Wine and it was quite fine...except one little thing...sometimes the game lost it's ...yyyy....mind?:P
The bug was: The game kept on going but I couldn't move...neither keybord nor mouse...and even if somebody killed me in the game I still couldn't get out to the main menu...
Oh and one more thing...the textures were funny...
And linux IS faster than windows:)at least on my machine...
