I did try 2 different resolution settings, and possibly tried both 16- and 32-bit color; I didn't notice any difference in brightness. I could hook up a different monitor, except for 2 things: the other monitor that I could test it with is smaller and crappier (so I wouldn't be gaming with it anyways), but there's also the fact that I play many, many other 3D games without brightness problems with this monitor (and in the rare cases that I find the games too dark, a slight brightness increase using the in-game options/menus always solves the problem).
All they gotta do is allow a greater gamma range, and allow us to jack up the gamma without causing the interface to blind me :). But hopefully this problem will be isolated to the demo.

Maybe the game IS intented to be that dark... Otherwise, why would there be torches?
And maybe we all increase the brightness of our monitors to save torches but that's sort of "cheating" and people with dark monitors are the only ones who can't "cheat".
Ever tried playing Dungeon Master or simply UnderWorld without torches or lanterns or magic light ?

Ok folks. For anyone having this problem please check the readme.txt, it IS addressed in there:
"4.3. If the ingame screen is all black and you can't see anything:
Some graphic cards are not compatible with the fog feature we're using in ARX (ATI rage
pro for example), to solve the problem, try to edit the CFG.ini file and set ATI to 1."
Does that help fix your problem at all?

I think that what our fellow complains about is a screen too dark, but not totally black.
Therefore, I don't think the problem comes from the video card.

What he describes fits the problem perfectly, several people have fixed it this way. There is no other logical reason why increasing gamma beyond max would not make any visible difference to game surroundings - the gamma is obviously working since the icons turn white, something else is preventing him from seeing the 3D game world.
It's worth a try, no? It would at least eliminate the possibility.

Try to fiddle with the 3D driver settings, aka "fog table emulation" and related settings.
Also, try to edit the "fog distance" in Arx itself.
