my monitor is a bit darker than usuall... the arx demo is so dark, that after i've maxed out the gama in video settings [that's 10] i had to modify the config.ini and set gama to 20.. still i have no clue about surrounding environment most of the time though.. side effect of this is that book [where the stats are] is almost solid white.. some lightning would be VERY helpfull.. what do you think? i mean not alowing higher gamma setting, just make the ingame lights prodice more light.,,,

Shutter your room and switch the light off...
Playing in the dark often helps seeing better with dark monitors.
If it's still insufficient, use torches...

Giving more gamma will do the trick...
I have the same problem, but they shouldn't mess up the picture for properly adjusted monitors... :p

the problem is that i have all room lights off, i even have special curtains which let in very little light [so basically, i'm sitting in a cave :ebil: ] so the ambient light isn't problem.. moreover, i moved the ingame gamma slider to the maximum and it was not enough.. my current gamma setting is OWERBURN 2X ..:weird:

Don`t worry, here`s a solution:
Buy yourself a new monitor OR if you have a tv-out; connect it to the telly.
Easy, ay?! ;)
*yeah-yeah, I know: You don`t have the money & I`m just kidding with you*

Instead of changing the ingame gamma, try changing the gamma in the display properties of the Windows desktop (if your video card and drivers allow it).
I remember that, with my previous monitor, I had to do that in some games that did not allow to change the ingame gamma... And it worked (although your book will probably look too white).

This is a problem that I had, too. There's nothing wrong with my monitor or display settings. It's a problem with the game that needs to be fixed before release. And jacking up the gamma in the config file, as someone already said, makes the 2D graphics way too bright.

If you can sit in a totally dark room with the gamma maxed out and you can't see stuff... well... it sure sounds like a problem with the monitor?
Unless a game bug manages to make the game darker when run on certain systems??!? I find it harder to imagine that could be the case, though.

Well, I can tell ya that it isn't a problem with any other games, so that's my point of reference. Obviously not everyone is having this problem, but many are, so I believe that it is likely that there is something causing the problem with specific system software or hardware configurations. I'm using the latest nVidia drivers and stuff, and I'm no rookie to 3D gaming or hardware, so that's where my money is.
Edit: By the way, I can see stuff, but it's very difficult, and I've noticed screenshots that display certain areas (like the dungeon part of the demo) much brighter than when I played, gamma maxed. So if I'm able to view screenshots that look a fair bit brighter than when I played the demo, that would seem to indicate that my monitor (or desktop gamma settings) are fine, I think.

It can be a refresh rate problem (monitor overload). Did you try different screen resolution settings in Arx, and also what is your Desctop bit depth? 16/32?
Can you try a different monitor (maybe a different one produces different results?)
It should be possible to find out where the problem really is.
Good luck!
