Surely this has been covered, but darned if I can find reference to it.
You know that you can give Gunther a weapon or not, but there's a 3rd option.
If you have nothing he wants, you'll say that you're short on weapons, he'll reply "then we shall find them. Then he continues on as though you had given him a weapon.
Wondering if being short on acceptable weapons changes anything later, like perhaps he takes pity, and gives you something.
Looks like Gunther will take a combat knife, a pistol, or an assault rifle (interesting that would be in the script...afaik, there isn't one on liberty island. I used a cheat.).
Anything else I've tried so far defaults to the "short on weapons" script.
Still playing with it, but if anyone knows more about this option, I'd like to know. Thanks.

That's kind of hilarious. Have you tried sneaking in, using that to make him go out unarmed, and then watch him fight the NSF with his bare hands?

He defaults to a knife, which makes giving him one kinda pointless...
For kicks, I maxed out the mods on an assault rifle and gave that to him.
He was out of ammo, on one NSF guard, before he even got out of the lobby.
So, pointless. Better to run past Paul at the start if you want an invincible teammate to kick ass for you. He's not horrible when he gets down to just his sword.
Gunther may as well be swinging a butter knife...

He's pissed at you later if you refuse to give him anything, but if you don't have anything then he's cool with it (so I generally drop my pistol outside first). And even if you do refuse, he's not that pissed, it's a throwaway subsequent convo line that has no downstream effects.
Plus he's invincible anyway, so it doesn't matter what he's armed with: if it wasn't for the fact that he's just trying to get to a spot outside UNATCO HQ (where he then mooches), he'd be more than capable of clearing the entire island for you with just a knife. I guess you could lead NSF back to him, but then you're better off doing that with Paul and the SecBot2 on the docks, anyway. :D
(oh, and if you give him an assault rifle it'll only have the one clip, so he'll get 30 shots and then resort to knife. And yeah: the AI is terrible at using assault rifles)
