Hey guys,
I just started playing Arx and am loving it. One question for a newbie. Maybe I missed something, but is there no way to move up or down while levitating? Being able to glide over pits is cool and all, but I really want to change my altitude as well.

I haven't found a way to go up or down. I wish I could though!

There's no way that I know save climbing up a slope. I guess if you could fly the game would be a little too easy in places.

Interestingly enough, while you can't effectively cast it while standing on a slope to gain a foot or two of height (it just fizzles), you can cast it while at the apex of a jump if you time it right (and, of course, if you 'store' it before jumping).
