I never realised how complicated Oblivion's system was until I had to try to explain it to someone, and I got the :erg: look. I figured it out pretty quickly without really paying attention to the manual. Must be how my brain works - it all made complete sense to me when I saw it in action.
And yet it took me months on end to figure out why I couldn't equip the shotgun in SS2 :p

On the subject of advancing attributes, has anyone noticed how stupidly easy it is to up your magic skills at lower levels? I think I cast a simple Detect Life spell 6 times and went from level 5 Mysticism to level 10 :weird:.
In fact, levelling up seems to happen an awful lot quicker than it did in Morrowind too.

That's the case with everything. My sneak and marksman skills skyrocketed in the early going, but leveled off fairly quickly. I'm probably wrong - it's been a few years, after all - but the progression to higher levels of skills actually feels slower than it did in Morrowind. But that's more likely just my pro-Morrowind bias showing.

I've been convinced that it was faster too, but really it is hard to balance overall I guess. My sneak has gone way up, while skills like marksman seem to go up very slowly. But I'm definitely levelling up way faster than in Morrowind.

the mage leveling is soooo easy. you can only pay attention to 2 governing attributes (intelligence and willpower) and get a 2-mana-costing charm spell for illusion, make a 2 mana 1 fire dmg spell, a 1 health restore, and a very easy unlock to cast on an easy or higher.
mages in my view level up much too fast.

Well we could all exploit various aspects of the game to maximize the leveling, etc, but some of us prefer to be more normal and just have fun. No one in their right mind would actually want a +1 heal spell, unless they are trying to exploit the level-up. So just play normal and the leveling will work normally and pretty well balanced as well.
