There was a thread that looked like it was going to touch on this topic, but it quickly devolved into an argument about the relative merits of beating up mud crabs with wooden butterknives or some damned thing.
As I understand it, the maximum attribute increase per level is 5, depending on which skills were used and advanced prior to that level-up. Through an Igz-inspired course of judicious skillz selection and almost never sleeping, I've managed to really crank up my attribute increase every time I've leveled thus far. (I'm currently level 4.) However, as I approach level 5, I find myself unable to hit a 5 increase in any of my stats no matter what I do. I've spent a lot of game-time fiddling around with this; I leveled, didn't like the stats, went off and cleared out two or three random dungeons, plus one biggie main-quest mission that would be buried in spoiler tags if I bothered to get into any detail about it here, and after all that, when I slept to level, I found that my stat increases were completely unchanged, even though many of my relevant individual skills had increased numerous times.
So how the hell does it work, exactly? Can anyone explain it, or point me somewhere that does? Are there limiting factors that sometimes prevent attribute increases from reaching the magic 5? Believe it or not, this has less to do with ruthless maximization of stats (I love TES games, but I'm not quite that obsessive about it) than it does with simply knowing how it works - a good understanding of the underlying rules means I can stop thinking about them so much.

all i can tell you for sure is that once you see the level up symbol, nothing you do (short of using the CS) will change what bonuses you have for the stats. they are set in stone at that point.
and i don't min/max or even worry about min/maxing my stats each level up. you're only level 4 at this point, but even with 2's or 3's in your primary stats, you'll soon be pretty powerful. but that wasn't the info you wanted, was it? someone else with more knowledge about it will come along soon, i'm sure.

Putting off leveling up has no benefit in Oblivion. Skill ups that you got before getting entitled for a level up are only ones that affect that level up. Skilsl you get after that affect your level up after that, wether you sleep or not.

Actually, that's exactly the sort of information I wanted. I was assuming that skill bonuses continued to increase even after you hit the "level-up" point, but if that's not the case, then I'm gonna go get some sleep.
But a related question, then: what happens to the skill bonuses you do earn after you've hit the level-up point, but before you actually level? Are they just lost, or do they carry over to the next level-up?
<edit>Well, maybe if I read everything before spazzing on the reply button I'd have my questions answered. So essentially, once you're set to level up, you may as well do it because there's no point in waiting, but everything you do happen to earn prior to leveling will still be applied later on? That's good, simple enough even for me to remember and understand. But since I can't bring myself to leave without asking at least one question that hasn't already been answered, where the hell is all this shit explained? 'Cuz it sure ain't in my manual.

If I get home and check my manual and it's there, I'm going to be so pissed.

Yeah, damned WingedKagouti anyway. Don't you just hate those holier-than-thou manual police? So smug with their
"well, if you just bothered to look on page such and such, but oh ho ho, that would involve reading wouldn't it?"

See (
http://www.gamespot.com/features/6147085/p-12.html) . It explains how the level up process works, what changes when you level up, and how much you have to up a skill for it to give you +5 (gotta get 10 or more skill-ups in skills related to a specific stat - for instance, if I get +4 armorer, +5 block, and +1 heavy armor, I can get +5 endurance at level up).

There's a certain amount of smugness around here that will earn somebody a cock-punching if it keeps up.
In other news, god dammit, on page 27, below the picture, was a brief and somewhat vague but I suppose clear enough explanation of how this whole shit works, so now I'm irritated because I have enough opportunities throughout the normal course of my day to look like a retard without going online and saying HAY GUYS LOOK AT ME I'M A MORON
Anyway. I'm up to level six, and now that I have a better idea of how leveling works, it's all going much more smoothly. The truth of the matter is that it's not a case of being a powergaming freak, I'm just a bit obsessive about how the rules work. The more complex the system (and relative to most CPRGs, Oblivion is pretty complicated) the more I like to know about how it all comes together.
