I, frankly, find it sickening how negative some people here are. We get it - you liked the old games, and because the reboot isn't 100% similar, you throw up your hands and cry to the world that all hope is lost. That's your right, but no one needs, or cares, to see that kind of negativity in a thread that is supposed to be about constructive criticism.
Stop trying to bring down the entire project with your poison and maybe, just maybe, a decent game can be created.
I agree that there is an overwhelming amount of negativity. However, I think a lot of the frustration here is that no matter how much we criticize - constructive or not - there is very little we can do that will affect the game. I seriously doubt that anything we say or do could "bring down the entire project". EM appears to be set in their course and nothing we say matters. This is infuriating for a fan base that has carried Thief for over a decade.

Also, it's really interesting you think we have the power to change the game from over here. Okey doke.
Huh? If you don't think so, then why do you even bother with that SR petition?
I too really much doubt that we can do much about the game or change any big design decisions (that's what the game designers are for), but there's always a chance that the devs may be listening to
some ideas.

Because there is always the hope that somehow it will make a difference! Hope is all that is left.

No. You don't get it
at all. We're saying something
other than what you think. The fact you will not look past a certain perspective to see what it is we are saying is the reason the negativity is even stronger. The lack of perspective makes more things to contend with and personal on the forums than
just the game industry's continual risk aversion. The only reason some of us liked the old games is because we didn't like many of the games in the years before them, along side them, and were sad to see new games developers didn't pick up what LGS started. We'd like more games today if there were titles worth it. We hoped LGS would lead to a new trend. What we don't like in games are the adherence to the tried and true for money, and new "trends" that aren't improvements that become typical and common. It can't be explained simply, sorry.
Also, it's really interesting you think we have the power to change the game from over here. Boy, wouldn't that be something. You gotta hate Thief a lot to call what Thief does best "poison", but I'm betting that's displaced anger. Maybe you think your post isn't negative, or maybe you can now understand how passion for something one believes in can look negative but come from positive motives. From this side of the coin, your post looks grossly negative.
I really should have figured that the first thing someone would try to do is completely turn my post around. I'm not the slightest bit negative about the game. Sure, there are a few things that could use improvement, or change. I'm not denying that, because no game is perfect, especially one that still has months of development time ahead of it.
If anything, I'm perhaps a tad bit negative about the Thief community here, although I never stated such a thing, and I certainly wouldn't badmouth it. I only feel that there far too much negativity about the project stemming from people who call themselves fans of the series. (Note: this only applies to certain individuals. Not everyone who calls them-self a thief fan). I suppose you're welcome to disagree, but don't you dare turn my words around and call me out on being yet another Negative Nancy, when all anyone has to do is flip back through the pages to see all the negativity others have spewed. I'm all for this game, for this project and for this community to grow and improve.
Also, I fail to see where I called anything concerning the games to be 'poison'. If you're going to comment on my post, you might as well try reading over everything I said, correctly. Otherwise, there's little point in carrying on this conversation.
We're both on the same team - we both want an amazing reboot for what's always been an incredible franchise. I'm just sick of the constant negativity and drama. The Thief community should really be above that, considering how (sadly) small it is.

It was clear from the very beginning, though, when they refused to change that stupid placeholder logo.

For me, I am hoping that they'll be able to produce the feeling of playing Thief. Given that SR is not a part of the project, they're going to have to put significant emphasis on the other aspects that make Thief great. Things like atmosphere, music, level design, and story. What I am hoping for are:
* New environments
* Interesting story
* Significant emphasis on stealth and exploration
I understand that there will likely be a lot of things to cater to the console crowd. Things like markers, mini-maps, the Focus ability. I know they said this could be toggled but I really hope that if we choose to play old school, we aren't gimped.

It was a placeholder logo. By its very definition it's meant to be changed.

(The new logo design is even better than the original Thief's.)
retractingblinds on 25/4/2013 at 17:14
How's the new logo better? It's much more uniform, authoritative, and lacks the boldness of the scratchy & chaoticness of the original. As a logo, I'd argue the original is better because it stands out against other symbols and designs very well.

I like em both, but I think the new one is better. I thought the old one had a bad tattoo kind of vibe to it.
