Skyrim has horse and cart to the main cities, plus you can own a horse, or you can walk / run. No one is forcing fast travel on you. You can just opt not to use it if you don't like it.

You never got to see yourself riding the silt-strider though (which would have been soooo cool). It was almost the same as fast-travel, except you had to go through the routine of telling the caravaner where you wanted to go. That got old after awhile.

On subject, as I have limited playtime I'm pleased they have the horse and cart. I'm not ashamed to use fast travel where necessary but the ability to hire someone to take me to a place is both in keeping with the world story and allows me to travel to places that I haven't been to previously.
