I'd be all for organizing a London meet-up, but given that I still have a piss-poor sense of the cities geography, transportation, etc. I'm probably not the best person to do it.

. . . and likely a used bookshop close.
Charity shops (where I get most of my books from)? Library? Ask in (
http://www.localmouth.com/go/new-cross-gate) your local forum?
Libraries can be difficult if you don't have proof of address but maybe something can be sorted out.

Well, the good news is that the school library is pretty decent, particularly for an 8000 person institution. Additionally, all University of London students get access to Senate House, the bigass U of London library. The downside is that - unlike every other library system I've ever encountered - they do not transfer books between branches, so if I went something from Senate House I gotta take a couple of hours to go and get it.
Also, it's very much "academic," sometimes to the point of lunacy. Example: Neither library contains a single work by Alan Moore. Not even Watchmen. And Maus is in the children's section.

I could see that being fun if you were watching it with a group of people in a living room, but if you're in a theatre you probably shouldn't be vocally mocking it the entire way through, and then, really, what's the point?
I'm scheduled to go see Cold Souls on Monday, though. Even if it's no more than a Being John Malkovitch rip-off (and I'm hoping it's more) it should be fun.

Went to the ICA for a film - the theatre was quite nice. Comfy seats, and the narrowness ensured that there were no "bad" seats. Only problem was that it wasn't properly sloped, meaning the head in front of me obscured the subtitles and I had to spend the entire film leaning around him >_>
Today, I am forced to go to the Leicester Square Vue if I want to see Cold Souls - hopefully it is bearable!
Also, the tickets they mailed me NEVER ACTUALLY ARRIVED. They say I can pick up reprints at the box office, but they also release "extra" tickets at half an hour before the film. Would my reprint be an "extra" ticket? Do I have to get there BEFORE half an hour before (thus forcing me to shoot for getting there are least 45 minutes before due to bus inaccuracies)? I don't know! I suppose I will find out.
I will say, for all of London's amenities, the British postal system SUCKS. I've so far had my mail undelivered (above), dropped on the building stairs, and in a classic case, carted off to the post office because it "didn't fit in the slot" despite the fact that it DID fit in the slot with plenty of space left over.
I dunno, maybe it's just that our particular postperson is evil.

you wore the wrong tshirt and now even the postie knows

It's a bit unfortunate that you've arrived in the middle of a lot of postal unrest and looming strikes but it really is bad, yes. There's institutionalised theft at sorting centres - never send anything valuable by Royal Mail. Also they take the piss with fees and charges for stuff coming into the country. And "recorded delivery" isn't worth the paper it's misdelivered on, they're just shoved through the letterbox with everything else. Mail's only ever delivered in the afternoons anymore - except for stuff from other mail companies. Regarding those, you do hear a lot of crap stories about them leaving large packages on doorsteps and running off but personally I've never had an issue as they've been left with neighbours. I guess it'd be a lot worse living in a flat.

Maybe at your gaff but I've never had this issue and I track lots of recorded stuff online. In fact recorded deliveries have saved my ass a few times when deadlines were involved and the receiving office monkeys said, on the phone, (I paraphrase, natch) "Naw lav, it neva arrived." "What's your name?" "Miss Monica Noclue" "Yeah well Royal Mail says YOU signed for it bitch and since my passport's in there you better pull it out your ass NOW!".
Problem sorted.
Biatch.
