Selling Things to Creeper That Have a Higher Value than $5,000:
1. You need to have already sold Creeper enough items to total $5,000 less than the item you're selling. Doesn't matter what they are, but he needs to have at least {YOURITEM - $5k} in his inventory.
2. For the purposes of this demonstration, let's say you want to sell a Sword of White Woe (valued at $14k). Note: you might first need to sell him some other stuff to get his inventory value up to the $9,000 we'll need to do this.
3. Find Creeper and Sell him your sword. It will show that his available cash is $5,000, but the total due to you is $14,000. If you try to click OK, he'll say, "I can't afford this transaction." BUT, during the same transaction, Buy enough merchandise from him to get your total due down to $5,000. That is, buy $9,000 worth of stuff back from him.
4. Wait 24 hours. Every merchant in the game refreshes their money supply every 24 hours.
5. Now Sell Creeper $5k more of the stuff you just bought from him, leaving with you $5k more in cash, and $4k leftover in merchandise.
6. Wait 24 hours.
7. Sell him the remaining $4k of stuff.
So, you've now sold him the Sword of White Woe, and gotten $14k for it. If you did it right, you shouldn't have anything left in your inventory that wasn't there before this transaction, and you shouldn't have lost any money in the process.
Make sense? You're simply Selling and Buying in increments of $5,000. Sell him $10k, buy back $5k. Sell him $22k, buy back $17k. Simple.
And remember, Creeper will haggle. He will go 1% higher than his initial offer. That is, if he offers you $4400 for something, it means he'll be willing to sell it as high as $4444, but not $4445. This can add up to a lot in the intial stages of the game. But by the time you become rich, it's just a waste of mouse clicks.

A semi-cheat way to steal ANYTHING is to get invisibility. Cast the invisibility and then go into sneak mode. Wait until the Sneak icon shows up, then pinch the item while your invisible. You'll become uninvisible, but you'll have the item and noone will have noticed anything.

Yes, you can really see the ol' TTLG spirit here. Somebody asks "How to get money legitimately?" and everybody says "Steal stuff" ;)
It's almost as if people had been playing a thief for so long they forgot what "legitimate" means... ;)

LOL, Talgor. I've been mulling over a response for this thread since it's inception weeks ago, but I think you nailed it. [thumbs up!] ...smilies not working for me *sigh*

Theres only two legitimate ways to get money: Sell stuff you find/get off monsters or do quests. Actually, if you do quests you'll end up not needing money because you'll have everything you need pretty much, a bunch of the quests give good armors or weapons as rewards.

thanks much to all. i guess i am being a bit influenced by my love of Thief, but i did make my character a thief, and i can't go against my nature :sly: i'm really only trying to get my skills higher quicker, i'm just impatient. once i'm satisfied with that, i probably won't steal as much, or be as money hungry. then again, i wouldn't want to waste my skills...
thanks for that explanation, Zaphod. i'd read a couple other explanations that said the same thing, but didn't quite get it. now my lightbulb's on.

Stealing is a legitimate way to make money. Adding it via the console isn't. Which is how I took it. ;)

As I said, a very TTLG-ish way of taking it. ;)

Hit upon this a couple of days ago, great for a Level 1 character (and legitimate in the 'doesn't involve stealing' sense); take the silt strider to Suran, and head for the Trader Ralds Orim's shop*. In there he has a glass dagger for sale. Its theoretical value is 4000, but it's in such bad condition (2/300) that he'll sell it to you for a pittance. Get hold of some armourer's hammers from somewhere, fix it up, then sell it on for some nice risk-free profit.
I'm pretty sure that's the shop, and the right name. In any case, it's definitely in Suran.

Become a simple farmer, it's safe, it's slow, but somewhat interesting.
Go into the grasslands on the east coast and just gather wickwheat, lot's and lot's of wickwheat, and sell it...somehow I always found gathering wickwheat to be somewhat entertaining...(Course having an inventory of tons of various things is kinda fun too for some reason)
