this BenQ is A-MVA (from AU Optronics) I think, not S-PVA (not 100% sure)
Hazro is not available here, seems like a local .uk brand (?), and I'm not .uk based :). I hope this 23'' display is being used in other, more popular/widely available brands.
ps what is pixel pitch of your NEC? That Hazro 23'' is 0.258.
pps yeah, I'm aware of that 8-bit vs. 6-bit thing (dithering - sounds familiar ;) see last line of opening post?)

Check ViewSonic. They have great LCDs. I have a VX922 19" standard format with 2ms response time. It is around a year old. I picked it up for 250 USD. I have been very pleased. I get great blacks & shading and no noticable glare. My monitor sits perpendicular & about a meter away from a window that gets full Texas afternoon sun. I have no problems, even with the blinds open. If you prefer a widescreen format, ViewSonic also has those available with similar features. This is a fast response time LCD designed for gaming. You can check the specs here or explore their other offerings.
