We are looking at getting a small television for the upstairs game room for our young kids (and for us when we are up there with them, etc.). I was thinking about a 32" as the viewing space will be close, probably within 10 feet at the furthest.
I can get a 32" 720p LCD TV for about $300 new. Does that seem worthwhile? 1080p on a 32" seems like a waste, and we did consider a 37" but I think the viewing quality from that distance may not justify the $150+ higher expense.
Any thoughts out there on this?

At 32", you're good no matter which way you go. 1080p will look better, of course, but I doubt your kids will notice the difference between it and 720p. Or even care if they do. Their days of home entertainment system snobbery are probably still far ahead of them.
And if they do complain, all you have to do is give them a stern look, and say that when you were their age, all you had was an 8-bit Nintendo hooked up to an old black and white TV. They should be happy with what they got.

Thanks!

I remember when 32" was considered large. :erg: Our first two T.V.s while I was growing up were both 22"....then we got the 32"

Oddly enough I was thinking the same, New Horizon. I think if I had to go back to a 22" TV then I'd probably get used to it quite soon, though.
the_grip: The only thing that you might want to consider about going for the 1080p is whether you may use it later to connect to a PC or laptop (once you upgrade the games room to a 54" version...). If you're using the PC to simply play videos then it probably won't matter - but if you want to use it for other purposes as well (e.g. browsing) then you may prefer to have a little more screen area without having to use scaling.

I've been watching some tv shows on my PC monitor, 22", rather than on the 40" tv and I was just thinking that actually you don't need a massive screen after all.
Still want a 60" 3D Sony Bravia though.

yeah, thanks to the theory of relativity, you just sit closer to the screen the smaller it is and it's all good
Wait -- why are you watching TV shows on your PC when you could just as easily pop them on a USB stick and watch them on your PS3?

Since SubjEff mentioned the Sony Bravias: I'm thinking of getting a Sony KDL-52HX800 or similar to upgrade my oldish 40" TV. Does anyone know the HX series? Is it worth it? I've got a fair number of Sony devices and am happy with all of them, but I don't want to buy this TV just because I'm a fanboy...

Sulphur - I don't even need to do that; I can stream everything to the PS3 and watch it on the big screen. The upscaler is fantastic too and even low res stuff looks good.
I'm just too lazy to go turn on the TV and the PS3 and get out of my nice chair here by the computer.
It's not to do with sitting closer or relativity anyway, it's just that the smaller screen is actually big enough. If I could be bothered I'd move.

Subj, I was being facetious about the relativity thing
not in a good way, but to continue that line of thought... how d'you expect to make that Tough Guy 2012 challenge if you can't even get off a chair? Huh? HUH???
seriously
