I find this to be pretty lazy/cliched thinking. I'm sure there are plenty of relatively happy artists who produce a great deal of quality work. Equally, there are probably loads of depressed types who get some type of 'self-worth' feeling from doing art. The law of averages suggests most of this will be pretty crappy art though (only a small percentage will be exceptional). Amount of talent is way more important than proclivity towards depression.
