Credit cards use pin numbers here, was introduced a few years ago.

Only? In France they've been around for almost twenty years on debit cards, phone card and all kinds of stuff...
I wish they could start using them in Spain it's so easier. Even with my French CB I had to present ID once, although I typed the PIN. Talk about stupid.

it's called chip and pin baby, there's a chip on the card and a pin required after a swipe. it's the eternal UK drive to pair shit up, like fish and chips and crisps and turkey stuffing flavour
Heh. We've had that basic system since around 1992 (eftpos), and at least the late 90's for credit cards since first CC I got had a pin on it.
You
can still sign for CC's in the UK too, I did when I hadn't yet been sent my pin. I did have a signed photo id though.

Indeed, I've always had a PIN code for my credit cards even before chip and PIN was introduced. I didn't know that some systems don't use it though!

Yep, there are fallbacks. As you said, people will need to show the merchant some form of photo ID in case they don't have/don't remember their PIN.

Interesting. Most cards here are refused if you don't know the PIN.
If it's a credit card, then simple ID works. But with the debit cards, the system refuses them if you don't enter the correct PIN. The merchant has no say in the matter.

See, that's what I thought. And that's what I told the woman at my bank when I realized that some unknown person may have gotten a hold of my renewed debit card. She said some merchants don't need a PIN; they're supposed to check for ID (but often don't).

Shit, I just got gas an hour ago with a credit card and all it asked for was my ZIP code. SAFE AS HOUSES!
Enchantermon on 9/9/2009 at 02:39
Yeah, I've been asked for that too, but only at one chain, Hess.

I got a credit card so I could buy NWN modules, and I still have none. I wish that was a joke.
Anyway, my (Maestro) debit card has an overdraft facility, even though I asked to not have one. When I applied for a credit card I was denied because of youth and unstable employment, but ended up joining a £5/month advantage scheme which gives insurance etc... I don't understand how people can borrow so much. Also, the credit card has a PIN but it seems to be 50/50 if I get asked for it or not.
