I just bought S.T.A.L.K.E.R. today as well. For a game that has received the thumbs up here, has no copy protection on the North American version, was now 26.99$, and has a follow up due out shortly; I figured the time was right to pick it up. Unfortunately, like most of the games I buy these days, I'll have to wait until I get a new computer in order to play it.
For those who are interested, my current computer is an AMD Duron 950Mhz, 256 MB of RAM, and a Geforce 2 MX 100/200 32 MB video card. :(

I got mine for $13 on Amazon. :o
But it seems that the price has now gone up to $20.

I'm also a Canuck.
Note: Our stuff usually costs more.

I thought it has SecuROM?

I'm only real familiar with videogames and miniature wargames, and Canadians pay more for both. It's odd considering that the US dollar and Canadian dollar are so close. Is there a real explanation for the prices, or is it just that they haven't changed to reflect changing economies?

STALKER uses the SecuROM copy protection system, which requires that the CD/DVD be kept in the drive while playing the game. For legal reasons I can't provide any details of a No-CD or No-DVD, or other methods of bypassing copy protection. I can however say that SecuROM can cause issues, particularly startup problems - see Page 3 for details. Note that the Russian version of the game uses the StarForce protection system, which is much worse than SecuROM.
It appears the North American version of this game does not have any copy protection, and hence has no DVD check either. Hopefully THQ will remove the CD/DVD check component of the copy protection for other regions in a future patch.
I also did a bit of checking and there's a bunch of people who mentioned that they can run the game without any disk check whatsoever, while others say that they do indeed have it.

I think it's the latter.

Be sure to install 1.0004 patch, also I highly recommend to install bardak's "bug fix attempt" for 1.0004 (I don't know where you can get it for English version, but it exists and is quite popular), it additionally fixes some annoying bugs (stash marks f.e.) as well as changes fictional names of weapons to real ones, no gameplay changes, additional contents etc., only fixes.
BTW, the game will seem hard from the start, you will keep to die and die. Only experience and proper equipment will put you on legs, and it will happen not too soon ;)

yes, the thing is that it's
a bit too more, for first playing through, IMO. bardak's just fixes obvious bugs and ZRP also
alters some things, i.e. changes devs vision.
