I am still amazed that nobody here caught
any of these items when they came out. Apathetic bloody planet, I've no sympathy at all.

Harold Perrineau, seen regularly on ABC's hit drama "Lost", has lined up three film roles in recent weeks says The Hollywood Reporter. The latest of which is Fox Atomic's "28 Weeks Later," the follow-up to the hit sci-fi indie "28 Days Later".
In the sequel, directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ("Intacto"), Perrineau will play an upbeat American Special Forces pilot who documents and leads to safety the families returning to London after the viral outbreak.
* Another 'Mummy' sequel is on the way. Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz both want to be on board.
* Strike Entertainment, the production company behind "Slither" and the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, is combing Hollywood for a writer (or writers) to tackle a theatrical prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter sci-fi classic "The Thing" reports Fangoria.
* Original Star Trek to get modern effects-

Star Trek journeys to the 21st century as the Original Series returns to broadcast syndication for the first time in 16 years with brand-new digitally remastered episodes to celebrate its 40th anniversary. CBS Paramount Domestic Television has officially announced that they are releasing digitally remastered episodes of Star Trek, with all new special effects and music, to celebrate the groundbreaking series' 40th anniversary, according to John Nogawski, president of CBS Paramount Domestic Television.
The Star Trek episodes will begin airing on the more than 200 stations that own the rights to the weekend broadcast syndication window starting September 16th. The plan is for all 79 episodes of the Original Series to be remastered, with the first batch of episodes chosen from a list of Star Trek fans' favorite shows. With the running order to be determined, it's unlikely to follow the classic air-date order or production order format familiar to fans.
The first episode will be "Balance of Terror", the classic first time the Enterprise crew engaged against the Romulans. The most noticeable change will be redoing many of the special effects, created with 1960s technology, with 21st century computer-generated imagery (CGI).

I was aware of all that news, here are my points:
* Uninspired sequels and yet more remakes, who gives a fuck?
* el oh el, prequels and redoing originals, Lucas birthed the fucked up idea to the world, let us rejoice by denutting him
* Hobbit rumour is as vague as myself after four or five whiskeys

Fuck, and I just corrected someone for that the other day. What the fuck.
And I don't answer cross-thread questions, oudeis. ;)

Oddly, I was just thinking about re-watching the Mummy movies. Should be entertaining.

Bleh. When Enterprise crashed and burned, I thought they'd at least give it some time before trying again. And if I hear 'digitally remastered' one more time, I'll scream. On that note, if you're going to make a mess out of it, why not hand the rights over to JMS and see if his vision is worth watching?

My movie-fu is weak, but surely SW Episode I-III weren't the first examples of a prequel to a popular franchise?
There have been quite a few good games, movies, and TV shows that benefitted from the craze - Resident Evil 0, Zero Mission (to a lesser extent - many issues); King Kong, technically Lord of the Rings; BattleStar Galactica; to name a few. Actually, that's all I could think of.

Apart from it appearing as though all your examples were post Lucas' prequels, I would argue that the concept of prequels being commerically viable was not especially considered in Hollywood until after his announcement in 1997. I certainly find it no small coincidence that there have been a surge of them since.

Yup, the only important thing is that it's "whisky" when the product is Scotch and "whiskey" when it's anything else. :p

Trek redone with modern effects sounds interesting to me. Although apparently this is only spaceship stuff, so monsters, aliens, sets etc are unaffected.
Kirk's Enterprise (or at least, an identical ship of the same type) remade in Computer Graphics has already been done in an ep of Enterprise, and it was pretty awesome. Completely faithful to the original model, just looked a lot more real.
