I think I need to prioritise the productivity stuff over the gaming stuff and it looks unlikely I'll get a gaming laptop for £500.
I'm happy enough if I can play GTA3 or something on it. I need to revisit old games too from time to time.

Then I'd say go ahead and pull the trigger on that computer you linked to above then. I looked up PCSpecialist to see how good their machines are, and they seem to be a pretty solid company, and the machine itself uses high quality parts, if not necessarily the highest end stuff. You could do a lot worse for that price.

One thing I just noticed with both your choices is that you're opting for a fairly low resolution screen. Since you'll be using this for work more than gaming, you might want to consider going at least with a 1600x900 screen. You'll be able to fit more onscreen, and the higher pixel density will be easier on the eyes.

* Mostly for MS Office and some indie & retro gaming on it. (

* Looking for something not too expensive, which will be ok with large documents containing a lot of images, plus can run a few games. Watching movies also a fairly big chunk of the action.
* Out of the two the Samsung is the one one with the most grunt, the Asus is noth more than an Android tablet with a keyboard - i.e. pointless.
* well the Samsung is £510, so I assume the budget is very close to £500? If so I found another link for Dabs thats cheaper at (

Get a Mac Air. Seriously. I got one and it's honestly been the best thing ever. .
I agree they are very well built machines (most of the time) but the cost precludes them for the majority that just want a laptop without being ripped off. The MBA is the roughly the same spec, with a better cpu and GPU, but not but £400 better?! Also the SS has an anti-reflective screen, to this day i don't know WTF laptop makers think a glossy screen is a good idea.
There are many more ultra portable laptop out there, I have only looked at this point in time.
When you go for a proper laptop you get much more bang for you buck at the expense of weight, thats not a bad specs for the money. the GT840 is a monster laptop CPU w/384 cores - you can play mainstream games with that.
Just sent you a PM as I realised I have a spare laptop thats of similar spec to the SS but £200 cheaper.

Cheers Bikerdude - you're awesome as always, I think I'm going to try to stretch to that one.

BD - I can't reply to your PMs for some reason. My answer to your last question is: "I don't want AZERTY - I'm a UK ex-pat."

Someone I know also recommended Novatech. I might be being stupid, but I can't see the custom build option on their site.
