"Mobile desktop is exactly the description of what I need. Not huge, but doesn't need to be ultra thin or light or small. I'm really only interested in having a laptop I can do work on and maybe some music editing stuff if I decide that needs to be portable at some point. Nothing tremendously fancy. I'd say my basic specs are at least 4 gb RAM, at least 1 TB HDD (or smaller SSD and I'll buy a 1 TB external drive), at least an i5 or AMD equivalent (anyone know what that is?) and preferably separate video card as I may play the occasional game on it. If that can be had for <£500 (or up to £600 if something amazing is on special offer or there is a "too good to miss" factor), then I'm a happy camper."
I've heard nothing but good things about Lenovo laptops recently. Their Y series sounds like it'll be right up your alley, though I'm not 100% sure on the price. In the US, it's $899 for the entry level model, which would put it at around £550. Problem is, computers are generally more expensive in the UK, so it might cost you a little more than that.
And of course there's always Dell. The not at all fancy, but usually reliable workhorse of the computer world.

Great tips. I've heard nothing but good about Lenovo. I'll give PCSpecialist a go too. Only problem is delivery to France, but I'm guessing that'll only add cost rather than be a deal breaker.

Bikerdude is who you need for this. Are you a TDM forum member? If so, hit him up a message.

What's TDM? I know BD from his regular and very helpful responses to my previous tech questions about video cards. I assume he still frequents.

The Dark Mod.
Heard of it?
:p

Vaguely - is it a Thief mod? I'm not much of a Thief fan I'm afraid. *engages gun-kata dodge sequence*

You've really never heard of TDM?
It's a total conversion for Doom 3. (

It's a pretty big deal.
Anyway, bikerdude is on the TDM team and posts there far more than he does here.

Spec-wise, it seems decent - anyone know if it's good for the price?
Everything's good about that computer save for the GPU, which is one of Intel's lower end integrated chips. It'll run Office alright, but won't cover you very well on anything but low-fi indie games and older titles.
