So you would prefer to spend most of your cash on a gaming capable laptop and if there is anything left over put that towards the desktop PC..?
It's more of an either-or. Most likely, the PC will be sold off or given away if I go with the laptop. But I'm happy to consider all options.

The laptop is going to squeeze your budget just by being a laptop, so consider whether portability is really an important point.
Other down sides are that you have fewer screen options (unless you want to dock it) and a far more restricted upgrade pathway. A good desktop machine can be Frankensteined / stone souped* for the best part of a decade without falling behind the times. Mine which I'm in the process of upgrading (taking a while due to pregnant wife / imminent house move getting in the way) was built in 2007 and I'm upgrading it because e.g. I can't play Watch Dogs at full settings or I can't play Skyrim with all of the hi-res texture and mesh mods (can play it with some). I could probably limp on for another year or two with it (depending on how fast game tech moves, though my backlog says even that doesn't need to be an issue) - I'm only upgrading because I don't like to be behind the curve.
That said, I also have a laptop which (thanks to Bikerdude, who is an awesome asset to this forum) runs recent games pretty well which I bought for €800. Currently playing Borderlands the pre-sequel on full settings at 1600x900 without a single drop in frame rate. Nice to have something I can move to wherever I fancy chilling every now and then, but I consider it a luxury and would take desktop over laptop if the choice was forced on me.

Well, for the next two years, I most likely won't be anywhere near my desktop 80% of the time. I can use a laptop in class or at home or in my dorm or wherever, so yeah.

if that's the case, then whatever i5 machine with a dedicated gpu is available should do fine. ssd would be nice, but not sure whether that will be manageable with a 1k budget. extended warranty would be nice as well.

I can give you the specs of my laptop if you like? I custom built it at (
www.pcspecialist.co.uk) - not sure if they'll ship to India (or do it cheaply enough to be worthwhile) though.

They don't have the option to deliver outside Europe, according to the site.

Is HDD-to-SDD that big an improvement in this case? What advantages would I get? And if so, how do I switch the HDD for an SDD?
Also, it has only 2 GB of VRAM, will that be an issue for the future? Games seem to be requiring more RAM and VRAM do they not?

* Windows will boot in 10-20 seconds, firefox with loads of addons on first start loads in 5-10s compared to 15-30, games load much quicker and windows in general is far more responsive.
* that 2GB of Vram is a lot for a laptop and don't forget that's just for the dedicated gfx card. Most desktop gfx cards only have 2gb of ram and you'll be hard pressed to find a gaming laptop with more for the budget you have.
