ve had my Toshiba Satellite Pro for nearly 2 years; its a great little machine and I love it to bits (plus its been quite happily chugging along with Win7 so I'm happy!).
Lately though the fan at the side and below gets really really hot and ocassionally (like, maybe once a month); I reckon it overheats and switches off at random.
Also the battery life sucks.
So my question is this: how do you keep your laptop "clean" - Ive got one of those cans of air so i guess I can clean the fan etc, and I have no qualms about opening up the case to clean inside but I've never done it.
Also wheres the best place online to get a new battery for it? Currently got the following and I need something that lasts longer than 30 seconds when i unplug it...
Toshiba Li-Ion Battery Pack
DC10.8v/10,8V 4000mAh
I know I'll have to get a new laptop eventually but I want to try and prolong the life of this one as much as possible.
Thanks!
Fonz.

Pretty much the same here; mine isn't a Pro though, and I've had it for three years this month. I eventually had to replace my battery because its life was just too short. Recently, though, I was told to make sure to unplug your laptop from the AC power when you turn it off and also when you put it into hibernation, otherwise the battery will overcharge and its life will shorten. I'm not sure how much truth is behind that, though.
Mine gets pretty hot too, especially around the fan and the PC Card slot (not sure why that last one gets warm; I never use it). I've been thinking about getting a cooling pad for it since the fan on the bottom doesn't seem to do much at all.

Yeah thats an idea - I keep mine on my carpeted floor usually as its also hooked up to my tv so might not be the best for the cooling.

Definitely not. Also, setting a laptop on the carpet is a bad idea. Static electricity could easily jump from the carpet to the internals through the fan vent(s).
I can't remember where I got my battery. I know the cheapest I could find was online, though. The box, unfortunately, is about 60+ miles away...
EDIT: Oh, wait, there's a URL on the battery. Northparts.

So what? Keep the laptop on a mat or something then?

Lithium Ion batteries are good for maybe 500 charge cycles. Given that a Laptop will last maybe two and a half hours on a charge it's therefore feasible to get through several charge cycles in a day. If you want your battery to last more than a year, don't use it. Pull the thing out the back and only plug it back in when you know you need to be away from a power point. The sad truth is that battery technology sucks. It's a sadder truth that nobody warns you.
Take a deep breath and blow the dust and junk out of the fans, inlets and outlets, trying not to inhale any debris. If you use your laptop on a soft surface like a bed, sofa or deep pile carpet the likelihood is that any intakes underneath will be restricted.

the simplest solution is a plate of aluminum about the same size as the laptop and put the laptop on that, or if you can afford £20-30 you get the same thing with 2 little fans on the bottom...
And here is one of many links I found, your looking at about £55 -

Oh, wow, much cheaper. I'll have to save that site.

Anything that will keep it from actually touching the carpet and won't transfer static. Personally, I keep my computer away from the carper altogether.
