But on the subject of external USB drive, at some point I suggest you get one(get one that matches the size of the second drive in the laptop, so 500GB for a 500GB etc) to use as a backup drive, the amount of times I have hear people say "Ive lost all my data"
I want to say something against this but I can't because all I have to go by is my own anecdotal experience in dealing with, backing up, and losing mission critical data. If you want backup and your desktop doesn't have a solution for that you could consider something that works as backup for both.

On the subject of backing-up, my setup is as follows -
Desktop:256GB SSD - boot
1TB HDD - data (used to be 500GB until it died, then replaced with this spare(for the Nas box), I'm using just over 1/4 of its capacity)
500GB HDD - backup
Laptop:256GB SSD - boot/data
64GB SD - backup
Nas:1TB HDD x2 - data
1TB USB - backup
* I run Syncback on both machines daily to their local backup drives -
* Then Syncback both machines weekly(I run the laptop as and when I use it) to the Nas (Synology) box -
* And the Nas backs itself up to an external USB drive weekly -

Well I ordered something close to the spec Biker suggested (but I couldn't make it take 3 different drives!). A few sacrifices along the way but I figure that's inevitable when you don't want some £1500 alienware monster.

er for that kind of money I would wont everything on my list, considering the specs of PCS machine including all the addition bits was under half that! so what the specs of said machine as in the UK you can send it back under the 7 day distance selling act if your not happy with it.

Well I meant that while I wanted some moderate gaming power I'm not getting a quad core i7, the SSD will be fairly small, I doubt I'm getting an ips panel. and so on. It's the sort of mid-range spec that I found hard to find at a good price amongst the big name manufacturers.
edit: here's what I went for
Chassis & Display SkyFire: 14" Matte HD+ LED Widescreen (1600x900)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i5 Dual Core Mobile Processor i5-4310M (2.70GHz) 3MB
Memory (RAM) 8GB KINGSTON SODIMM DDR3 1600MHz (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 850M - 2.0GB DDR5 Video RAM - DirectX® 11
2nd Graphics Card NONE
Memory - Hard Disk 120GB KINGSTON V300 SSD, SATA 6 Gb (450MB/R, 450MB/W)
2nd Hard Disk 500GB WD SCORPIO BLACK WD5000BPKX, SATA 6 Gb/s, 16MB CACHE (7200 rpm)

Hey CC, apologies I mis-read your post.
* I dont recommended to run a single stick of ram, see the (
http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/1349-ram-how-dual-channel-works-vs-single-channel/Page-3) following article, either get a single 4GB stick and then after you place the order call PCS and purchase another 4gb or just get 2x8GB. WTF they don't offer the 2x4 option is beyond me.
* For the extra few ££ I would get the Samsung 840 120gb, rather than the V300. The V300 uses the much despised sand-force controller and these don't have a rep for reliability. That and the Samsung will be faster all-round.
