I loved the Amish joke........
But seriously, why not just have this great big menu where you can turn the various things in life that make it diverse and interesting on and off? KKK members can turn off racial minority and differing sexual tastes. Pacifist Tibetans can remove all violence. Weather forcasters can make it so J.C's world is always like a level from "Super Mario Sunshine". And if a hideous cyborg/gorrilla crossbreed abomination bursts out of a air vent and latches onto your face, sucking the translucent juices from your cornea, then J.C should be worried because he won't be able to do anything. He won't be able to shoot the thing (violence). He won't be able to swear at it (bad language). He won't be able to call for help because all the lesbian hookers swarming around the levels won't exist. (and anyway, shouting is banned because it disturbs the peace). J.C won't be able to wear leather armour because vegans won't like to see cows killed, and J.C won't see anything through his sunglasses cos it'll be a nice, sunny day with fluffy clouds in the sky (those weather-men again).
So, if we follow this through, we go from a heroic alter ego gunning down nazi cyborgs, to a middle aged man standing barefoot and weaponless.
I have to say I prefer the first option. Viva la Difference!

On the surface, the idea of adding an option to turn off certain adult aspects of the game seems like a good idea. It makes everyone happy. However, a game like DX and (I hope) DX2 is more then a piece of entertainment, it is a work of digital art. The designers aren't making the game merely for the sake of making money, they are making it because they want the player to experience their story in their world. If you accept this idea, then the notion of an option to remove objectionable language becomes absurd. Someone earlier used the example of Michaelangelo's David (I think - well, it was something similar). Now, would Michaelangelo have made David with an optional fig leaf to cover his privates? No, because it would prevent the work from being viewed as he intended it. The same goes for a game of this caliber. The game will be released as the developers intended it to be played , and this is the key factor here.
Another way to think about it is this: I'm a writer, that's how I make money. When I'm working on a piece because I'm getting paid my "artistic" intentions go out the window because I need to pay the rent (and upgrade my computer to play DX2). But when I'm working on a piece because I feel it's important and (dare I say it) artistic, I will quite happily tear up a million rejection letters. ISA is not making DX2 so they can get a paycheck.

Sure they are.

I'm sure there's a few people in there willing to work on ths masterpeice at half wage just for the experience and a chance to work with one of the best game development companies in the world.

Originally posted by Huckeye Yes, but "I lost him" was a game quote. :) Thanks for answering. I am just having a really hard time seeing how the game could loose anything by losing that. Again looking at games like Thief, Mortal Kombat, Sanitarium (some of my favorite games with no language). and Deus Ex was not bad, but there were a few times I remember thinking, now why was that necesary? Hmmm, I'm wondering how someone could play a game which involves killing in cold blood, and yet still have a problem with language or sexual content. If you play a "game" as a form of escapism, then one must assume that you are allowed to remove all social and moral taboos, otherwise society would have to question whether playing these games, that simulate extremely violent behavior like blowing people up, is an indicator of our true immorality. Hopefully no one has a problem discerning reality from fantasy, although we all desire an immersive environment where we can break those mores.
That being said, IRL people use language that some find offensive. Some people play their music too loud and some people exhibit lewd acts that others find offensive. Hearing/Seeing this in a game may offend some, but if that is offensive, why isn't the exploding bodies and blood/gore more offensive? I don't think you can claim to be against one while permitting the other, greater offense. Its a game, the language and humanistic behaviors add to the environment, making the suspension of disbelief easier. These are obviously not all highly educated individuals (in the game), so its completely feasible that MJ12 trooper might employ language that wouldn't be suitable in "polite" society, but then again they aren't in polite society, they are in an extremely dangerous "position", and if you've ever seen war movies, military personnel are not known for their kind words.
So, I guess I'm saying that if you are having difficulty with the language used in the game, why aren't you having a problem with central theme of the game play (the NPCs
will shoot and kill you) and the apparent abundance of lethal force. Actually, the pundits should applaud this game (and Thief) for giving the gaming industry an alternative to the, "Kill 'em all and let God sort them out" mentality by providing a means to complete the game non-lethally. Compared to the social more of killing, language & sexual references come in a distant second on the offensive scale.
Then again, you could always voice your opinion by withholding your money.......although I doubt the developers will notice.

There's got to be a balance somewhere. If you're going to go quoting scriptures from the Bible, then you're outta luck with the game as a whole, because there is a lot of stuff the Bible says about violence (live by the sword, die by the sword; we're not supposed to fight against flesh & blood, etc.), so if you really believe that, then you probably should not be playing Deus Ex in the first place.
Not everyone in the ghetto is a foul-mouthed badass that makes the paint peel off the wall with his vulgarity. I think that it should be up to the designers if they want to implement a no profanity setting, but I don't think it's practical to "mother fucker" this and "mother fucker" that between every goddamn mother fucking word. ;) If you're going to make a violent video game where people are dying left and right, I honestly don't see how a few vulgar words can throw you off. It's like, "how can you be so desensitized in one aspect, & be so offended in the other". This is what I mean by saying that there must be some kind of balance, because either extremes can ruin your day. :erm:

Now half of these arguments are confusing. The other half is just plain dumb. Sorry had to get that off my chest.
AND NOW FOR MY WELL THOUGHT OUT, AND HIGHLY INTOXICATED ARGUMENTS!
The lesbian thing that was mentioned lots earlier? Maybe I'm just stupid are naive but I didn't notice that. And even so whats the big problem with it? It's teaching kids homosexuality is okay? Go to most schools and listen to what kids say. Most of the time gay is a euphism (is that right?) for bad, or stupid. Being gay kinda is okay though. It's not illegal in most states. And roughly 40% (of those surveyed) have admitted to "experimenting".
The language? Bullshit. Excuse me all of those priests, and soccer-moms (and yes that was very stereotypical), but a kid can learn those words from going outside during rush hour.
Third, your bitching about all of this when things like bioethicism, mass murder, and the continual hypocrisy of most people still exist? Jesus Christ on a bicycle! There are FAR more harmful things going on then videogame language and nudity. Heck (or hell depending on your "thumpiness"), if you can't get worked up about those things instead of ,if you are easily offended then DO NOT read this list, I realize it is wrong, but I'm just trying to make a point, shit, piss, fuck, cock, cunt, fag, nigger, bitch, whore, ass, or mass death something is seriously wrong with you. Consider your humanity(by which I mean all of the commonly attributed "human" traits).
My 1 cent. I'm cheap.
Oh yeah and I forgot. I really don't care what you think of my views, so go bugger off as the movie-British say. Do British people really say that? Oh well that's another topic.
Edit: To the mods/admins I apologize for my language if it'll get me banned.
juveli on 5/2/2003 at 10:36
Right. This topic has been discussed to death now, don't we all agree? Ion Storm uses whatever language they think fits the situation, which is exactly as it should be. Come on, IS, give us a real piece of ART!
And since my previous comments have been somewhat different....
My dear opponents, you WIN.
I LOSE.
Hope that makes at least somebody happy. :)
Nephy on 10/2/2003 at 21:26
I'm happy.
Or is that just the tequila?
Oh well either way...
