Hi Nethawk , what's up!!!
You obviously have never visited the Volunteer State have you? No, of course you haven't, because if you had then you probably would be like the majority of others from up North; they come for a visit, but wind up retiring here.
I, on the other hand have visited Toronto; a godless dungheap to say the least. Now, I don't have any first hand knowledge of Calgary, so I can't intelligently slam it. I would expect the same from you. :cheeky:
Nethawk on 1/10/2002 at 08:42
Yeah...was there in '98, side trip from Virginia Beach and North Carolina. Beautiful state - nice country living. The only thing I couldn't stand was all the bible thumping. I'm a very spiritual person myself, but man - I heard God and Jesus' names about a hundred times a day. Yeah, I agree to say that Toronto sucks.

Do you remember which city or part that you visited? Granted we are considered to be part of the "Bible Belt", but I haven't noticed the "in-your-face" type of "Bible Thumping" that you speak of.

Perhaps you could explain the idiom "unscented" as I really can't think of any sense in which it, err, makes sense.
What, exactly, is wrong with saying "goddamn"? I would like you to explain as I really have to idea. But I do know that just because you think it's evil and wrong and suchlike, there's no reason for me to have an examination of my life to see where I'm going wrong. Ever heard of the term cultural relativism? It applies to similar cultures as well as the LEDW/MEDW.
Having said this, I'm all for you having the opinion that it's a word that shouldn't be in the game. However, it seems to me that your choice is to buy it or not buy it.
Hmm.
I'm thinking it would be easy enough to make something that editted out of the text anything that might be offensive and replace it with something else and maybe it could be. But, if I were the developers I don't think I would consider that the game for, what, over 15s? Would be played by anyone who would be influenced into using any bad words in it.
Oh, and you're a religious-right-wing-extremist-radical-nut. :p

To answer your first question:
Quote:
Location: in a town where you cant smell a thingRecognize that from somewhere?
As for the answer to your second question: Have you ever heard of something called "The Bible"? How about the book of Exodus? Check out chapter 20, verse 7.
I fully understand that I have the choice to buy it or not buy it. Since this message board is here for "Ideas and Concepts", I thought that having the choice to turn off cursing and the like would be a good thing for those of us who have children that either want to try to play the game, or watch/listen as it's being played.

I have heard of the world's best selling fiction book ;), but don't own a copy, so if you wouldn't mind actually posting what it says, I'd be grateful.

Almost certainly over there too, they just probably don't say it in front of people like you. I can remember using language like that frequently when I was 11.
Having a toggle for right-wing-nutcases might be a bit friendlier on the rating and is probably a good idea for overly protective parents, but if its a choice between more lines and two sets of lines for the characters, well, its clearly the extra lines.
Iggs is right though, the game isnt exactly aimed at young children (under 10, I mean) so its not exactly an important thing.
I'm not saying it should be Daggerfall-esque with the nudity, be bloodier than Severance or have a big sticker on it saying More Foulmouthed than Kingpin, but a bit of bad language where it makes sense does help it out and some gore makes sense when someone get shot. Adult situations should be in, as its an adult game.
Iggs lives underground? ooh, didnt know that.

I'm sorry, but if you want Deus Ex2 to leave certain things out because they are "adult situations", then you simply don't understand the concept of Deus Ex. Deus Ex was never intended for kids, although they invariably got their hands on it I'm sure. This isn't to say that because games in the Deus Ex series are adult in nature, they should attempt to pack in lewd, morally decrepit instances whenever they can, and it isn't a license to go off the deep end with cursing. Of course, Deus Ex never did any of that in the first place, as it was all contextual and appropriate for the setting and game that it was. Try to think of Deus Ex as a world created for the game you are playing in instead of some amount of choices by the developers to put in more or less offensive material. You don't like those things? Tough -- that IS Deus Ex.
It's also strange to me how you can look at Deus Ex and ask for questionable material to be left out. Are we playing the same game here? Well, first of all, realize that JC Denton lives in a world where virtually everyone is dying of a disease released from the highest echelons of government to kill the poor. Targetted genocide, in effect. I guess we should leave that out -- it won't affect the plot, right? And it's certainly questionable. And it's also important we not offend anyone who, for realistic reasons or not, might have a thing against guns. Nevermind the fact that the game is a first person shooter with stealth elements. And lets not infuriate the international league of orphans, so we'll make sure Alex Denton has parents, unlike the unwholesome family structure that JC had to live with.
Ok, definitely I am being facetious somewhat with that last paragraph, but really, censorship never ends my friend. Don't ask to have Deus Ex2 limited in any way. You're killing the whole idea, man!
In addition, I think it's important to point out that you said some very strange things, about how if all of the potentially offensive material was left out of DX, in your own words,
Quote:
if you took all of the questionable material out of Deus Ex you would still have the exact same game, atmosphere, plot, fanbase, etc. I don't believe that IonStorm would have been limited in artistic freedom because all of the stuff I am talking about was not plot sensitive.
Not even getting into the endless pit of debate about what one person finds questionable and another doesn't, I'd like to list a few scenes and then have you tell me if, fundamentally, Deus Ex would be the same without it. I imagine that you would find violent crime against prostitue women by their pimps to be questionable. In one level, you come across the daughter of the 'Ton's owner backed into a corner by her pimp Johnny. If you leave the situation alone, Johnny eventually decides it's financially responsible for him to wax his ho. We better just delete that entire level, because it's pretty offensive if you think about it. My mother could have been a ho, and it might be super-traumatic for me to see her digital cousin consider the numbers 1-8-7 in a split second.
Point is, the Deus Ex series is how it is. Taking anything away from it would be just that; taking away from Deus Ex. I have full confidence in the developers to strike just the correct balance and make another beautiful masterpiece. And hey, I gotta admit -- if that means I get to shotgun some people while cursing and oggling naked ladies, then sign me up, because I must be a horrible person for not minding these things in moderation in my game if the world is such that these kinds of things happen.
PowerCrazy on 3/10/2002 at 04:58
So its ok to kill people, as long as you don't use naughty words... Right. Where is it defined in the Bible or elsewhere that, "Fuck" "Damn" "Shit" "bitch" etc. are bad words? Who invented that? And why should it affect our lives, and especially a game. Ridiculous and yes even hypocritical, hmm i recall an old childhood expression: "Sticks and Stones can break my bones but words will NEVER hurt me." So whats wrong with words? NOTHING! And that includes ALL words in ALL languages.
And as for protecting your kids. Its YOUR job as a parent not to sheild them from "questionable" material ( whatever that means) but its your job to explain to them why they shouldn't act/say/do/etc. those things. You CANNOT and SHOULD not try to shelter your children forever. It only makes them more vulnerable. Why not explain that using a curse word just shows a lack of vocabulary and intellect?
So could you tell me why a "curse" word has that stigma on it and how its bad for our society, yet killing someone is perfectly acceptable? Idiocy.

My goodness! What a hornets nest I've stirred up! That was never my intention.
There are many games with the feature that allows the things disscussed to be turned off. If it's not overly difficult to do, all I was requesting is that it be taken into consideration. I'm sorry if that was too much to ask.
Y'all take a chill pill will ya.
