What if the words "wee-wee head" offended me? But the words "fuck you bitch" didn't? In otherwords whos to say what is offensive and what isn't? Everyone here is reasonably mature so all words sohuld be treated as such--words. the word "God" should be given the same reaction as the word "cat" They are just words. and it is just a game. Deal with it. And as far as lesbians etc. Guess what that is life. I live in Austin TX the second largest collection of Homosexuals in the United States. Big deal. I see both Male and Female couples great. In America, and should be the world, You don't have the right not to be offended.
And further more I have the right to say ANYTIHNG i want to even if it offends you, with no consequences at all. (In 1911? the Supreme Court added the "Clear and Present danger Clause") but that sohuld just be common sense.
And that my friends is Life!

Practically everyone in this thread seems to assume that 'adult' language = good, everything else is kiddies' lingo.
The thing is, pulling off convincing invective-filled speech is so difficult, and personally I'd rather hear dialogue that is fairly neutral on 'fucks' and 'cocksuckers' than dialogue that sounds like a bad parody of gangsta rap. Personally, I felt that the dialogue in Deus Ex wasn't always brilliant (there were some very good bits, admittedly), and if they'd added loads of four-letter words to that it would have been insufferable.
Same with other scenes that are usually labelled 'adult' or 'mature' (which usually means immature and adolescent) - if they're there simply to cater to the pimply teenage Beavis&Butthead look/soundalikes, I'd rather do without them.
If they're done convincingly, they can definitely add to the credibility of the world the game is set in. However, the track record of games when it comes to 'adult content' is not exactly that hot, IMO.

I'll try one more time...
You can turn off blood & giblets nowadays. Some games change blood to slime or something, but usually gore just disappears from the game. Same thing could be done with swearing. Instead of changing the word "fuck" to "oh, good heavens" you could replace it with a "beep", or just silence. The thing is, everybody knows that the guy is swearing, as he should be if he's shot etc., BUT those innocent children won't be learning any dirty words (which they probably would use in the most inappropriate situations).
About the sexual issues... If they're done as they were in Deus Ex, there's really not that much to complain. They were done with good taste. If I censored something, I would probably silence the hotel room sounds, nothing else. Like many have said, there's a difference of being mature (DX) and being just rude (Kingpin).
So, my point is, if you can turn off gore to protect the fragile mind of the children, you should be able to turn off swearing also. Otherwise things are left in a halfway, and it's better to keep children away from those games.
Please note: I myself have no problem with the contents of Deus Ex. What I'm thinking here is that if I had children who wanted to play Deus Ex, what would I want to remove from the game before I'd let them play. The question "why would they play DX anyway" gets its answer from the child's curiosity. Sure, you can say "nah, you'll find it boring", but does s/he believe you? No. Child has to try it for 15 minutes before s/he says "I don't want to play anymore, it's silly". In that quarter of an hour, the child can already get some bad examples. So I understand if parents want to have an option to clean all dirty stuff. :)

Kids who learn bad words from a game like Deus Ex must have been underground for years, or, the kids must be 5 years old.

Cyborg, depending upon how you are raising them, and what kind of example YOU are as a parent.
Good comments
juveli, I agree with you. That's exactly the point I tried to make way back in this thread, give the CHOICE.:thumb:

First off, hats off to any kid under the age of 13 who is actually able to play Deus Ex unassisted by a legal guardian or parent. Some of the situations in there required my consulting walkthroughs. But censor the hotel room screwing? You're joking right? I don't know how many times I went around the building so I could find a way to "barge in on the action" and surprise them. I was kind of dissapointed when I found out I couldn't make my way in. Spector himself apparently, when asked his opinion on WalMart possibly not carrying Deus Ex2 because of its mature content replied; "Oh well".
And so it should be.:thumb:

Old thread, yeah I know but it's back in, man.
I have to side with the "Where is the swearing in DX crowd" as I really don't remember much of it. "Goddamn!" and suchlike is all I remember.
Sexual themes? What sexual themes? People were dancing in the club, lesbians are people too, why not take out anyone dancing? Admittedly, the strip dancer on the pool table was more... erotic (for lack of a better term, not because it turned me on ;)) but what do you remember, the sailors saying "Shake it, baby!" or "WHERE IS YEVGENY??"
I had a point somewhere.
Oh yeah, DX isn't exactly bad for children. Especially as anyone over 11 should know what sex is and how to spell "fuck". It's the way life is.

..."Goddamn!" and suchlike is all I rememberYep, that's the problem word. Call me a
religious-right-wing-extremist-radical-nut, but I can't find anywhere in the Word of God that His last name begins with "d".
If language such as this is commonplace for you, especially in the presence of children, then my friend you are in serious need of a self examination.
I've tried on two other occasions in this thread to make the simple point that a "CHOICE" is all that's being requested. Unfortunately several want to defend the trash talk, cursing, and leudness by interjecting their personal belief of why it's OK, now you have my personal belief of why I think it's NOT!
