There's this (
http://www.local12.com/content/breaking_news/story/Covington-Seeks-Info-on-Possible-Serial-Killer/SFbhkllNFUuIgA8SJLaSEg.cspx) dude, Anthony Kirkland, who got busted for a fairly brutal murder a couple of days ago. He spent 16 years in prison for murdering his girlfriend (and then setting her body on fire), got out 6 years ago. In 2007 he was involved in a standoff with cops as he threatened to murder his 18-month old son, got 115 days in prison, got out and immediately went back in for trying to solicit sex from his then-girlfriend's 13-year-old daughter. He just got out again last year, went to a halfway house for sex offenders, got kicked out for fighting, and is now being accused of murdering a 13-year-old girl (and setting her body on fire.) Cops found him in the woods with the girl's watch and iPod and her body was 100 yards away. He was suspected of at least two unsolved murders (similar MO- the bodies were burned), and they just announced on TV that cops suspect him of up to
16 murders, altogether.
As always, this guy is innocent until proven guilty, but let's put that aside for a second. Even if they never convict him of all 16 murders he'll very likely get the needle anyway if he's convicted of this latest murder. So, say he did it- why the fuck, considering his (
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090311/NEWS0107/903110316) record, was he even out on the streets in the first place? It just boggles my mind to see an obvious hardcase like this guy walking free.
City officials are trying to get the halfway house shut down, as well- which I think is a mistake, 'cuz then you got 30
more sex offenders on the streets.

Society is fucked, why would we expect any better from our Systems of Justice™?

Don't crims have a code: "Don't touch the kiddies"? Just stick him in max security and see how long he lasts.

Just like i was saying in the greyhound thread.
It happens in Canada too. They fulfill the sentance and get released even with an official "high risk to re-offend" sticker slapped on their record.

If they don't toss him in solitary (in my opinion, the only solitary cell appropriate for this guy is a deep hole) I don't expect him to make it to trial, let alone his own execution.

We had this thing where all sentences over a certain amount where automatically capped or halved or something weird like that. But that was kinda because they found out that the state had this vast list of people thown in jail for nothing, stuff they didn't do, corrupt DPP etc. It's the see-saw of stupid.

Justice is just a system like anything else. It constantly has to be modified, updated and fixed when bugs (such as this) are found, but overall you have to admit that it works fairly well. I'm not saying I'm happy with it, or that it works good enough, but its too easy to cherry pick individual cases among millions that don't work out and try to tear the whole thing down. Like government its pretty amazing it works as well as it does considering the number of parts required to be able to work together for anything to get done.
This situation though clearly is totally fucked and some asses should be fried for it.

The gross misstep was the first one. Not that taking advantage of the weakest (children) is much better but he proved his character by purposely killing and if someone isn't comfortable with giving someone life for that then they shouldn't be a judge or on a jury. The rest was a reaffirmation that letting him out was a mistake. Killing him now wont fix that. Changing the law might. But hey, some of them won't kill again.
Recently a guy was given 2 years house arrest and 3 of probation for stabbing a guy I work with 5 times in the back for repossessing a dog he had neglected to pay for. The prosecutor made the deal without informing the guy who was stabbed which is against state law. Mississsippi has no law against attempted murder and he had to be charged with assault. We haven't seen the last of Mr. Tubbs I'll bet. But hey, we have to make room for the 3 strikes potheads and over 10 pounds dealers that get life I guess.
When you are a judge or even on a jury you need to be able to assess the heinousness of a crime and deliberate murder is as bad as it gets. Sure some murders involve cannibalism or poking the body with a stick but all after is just icing on the cake of the worst possible thing anyone can do. But hey, lets make a deal of 25 so they get out in 10.
The guy above did not accidently beat someone to death in a fist fight. He murdered. But hey, if he were a celebrity he wouldn't have gotten a day in this society.
I've seen way more crap where murder is treated like bank robbery and makes me feel like the system does not work fairly well but what the hey.

Agreed, Tocky. Sadly.

I look forward to the future when we all have a chip in our heads and it can be programmed to give an electric shock each time someone is about to commit a crime.
