Was anyone else surprised that the like, 5 quests into the main quest, they sent you do close down an oblivion gate, at level 5?
Not that I'm complaining. "There's the gate, holy shit look at them poor out. You there! Tuco or whatever! Close that stupid ass gate, please, thanks." is much better than, "K, go into some pussy dwemner ruins and look for a little tiny box for an hour."
Pretty cool fireworks though, when you gank that stupid orb, and I got a new mace out of it.

okay.

I finally started the main quest. I didn't get a mace, I got a Shortsword of Embers. It's better than the Dagger of Embers I had before though.
Grabbing the Sigil Stone was really cool though. Have you figured out how to get the effects onto a weapon? When I use it I can only get the first affect (drain strength, I think?) and I really want the CE strength boost of 8pts. But I think I might have to have a higher enchant skill...

If you use it on an armor piece, it's the CE. If you use it on a weapon, it's the proc. I'm not sure if you can change it(though there's no reason to).
Another 'cute' thing the devs did(lazy coding), is they made generate the stats of the SStone at pickup. IE: quicksave just before picking up, and then keep loading till you get the one you want. They should've generated the stats of it as soon as the player enters the plane. Or in the very least, the tower of which it's located.

You can close the first gate at level 1, according to a friend of mine.
See, Oblivion scales up with you. One one hand this is great, because you'll always play a balanced game. However, I've heard that they might've taken it a bit too far. It seems everything scales, which means there generally won't be dungeons that are way out of your league.
I haven't really noticed this myself, as I'm a thief and I suck at fighting anything. If this really is the case though, there won't be any 'oh crap, I think I shouldn't be here quite yet' moments, like there were in morrowind.
Takes away some of the charm, I think. Encountering hideously strong enemies, or outrageously expensive items used to be a lot of fun.

It is possible. I started the game concentrating strictly on the main quest, and suddenly found myself in Kvatch, still at level 1. It was a bit difficult, the scamps gave me some trouble, the were a lot faster than me and my equipment was falling to pieces.
Once I got the gate and the city sorted out, I slept for the first time, and gained a couple of levels at once.
I'm now at level 5, and opponents in the game seem to have scaled up. Haven't been into oblivion since, but I met some watercolor trolls who took away my katana and used it as a toothpick after making mincemeat out of my character. :erg:
It is possible that I'm not very good at this game. I blame the xbox controller. Morrowind with PC was easier.

Morrowind was piece of cake. Cept for some bosses with stats pumped up to silly levels. (Almalexia, the psycho?)
All the beasts were easy and could be killed from low levels with some decent equipment.
Oblivion is challenging all the time, and it has given me some really tough fights were i really had to think twice about what to do.
Like, those crazy water colored trolls. They were tearing me apart, untill i tried fiilling them with poison arrows. Three shots from a safe distance and they were dead before even getting close.
It works in a freeform "adventure" game like this. It means that when you find a quest it will always be up to your level, and not some boring level 1 dungeon crawl you could do with your eyes closed.

I actually found it quite easy at level 1, but either this is because I haven't set the difficulty high, or my Pilgrim character just turned out well. The scamps were quite weak and the steel claymore I picked up earlier made short work of the Daedra. It's possible that I need to raise the difficulty level a bit.

I closed it at level 1, guess my sword skills are pretty good ^^
Fig455 on 28/3/2006 at 01:34
I was level 3-4 and raised 2 levels in there. That is as a khajiit Thief/Assassin archer.
