Oh, fuck you losers. This kind of reactionary bullshit is ultimately detrimental to improving racial conditions in the USA.
The issue here isn't that nigger isn't a bad word, or that it's somehow equivalent to 'honkey' or any anti-white epithet; the issue is that IT'S A WORD, and no matter how much power it carries it's not nearly as important as actions.
I mean, we have a near-universal acknowledgment that blacks are screwed over at every level - and instead of people getting pissed off about that, or about actual examples of blacks getting screwed over, they get pissed off over a minor celebrity saying nigger. Personally, if I were black, I'd much rather have someone call me a nigger than, say, be denied a promotion because of my race.
Also, as noted, they were heckling him - it's not like he came out of the blue and attacked him. Regardless of how horrible you find Michael Richard's actions, there's no argueing that the hecklers are assholes, and frankly I find it difficult to sympathize with them. You play with fire, you're gonna get burned, and all that.
Everybody's racist; the problem is that so many people won't acknowledge it, which makes it much more difficult to deal with.
Or maybe I'm just bitter that my teacher always said 'n-word' when talking about Huckleberry Finn. No one says "n-word" in Huckleberry Finn.
Everyone just wants to pretend that racism doesn't exist >:(
