Kiron Gillen, a game journalist with a reputation has written a 4000 word piece on Shodan, which is named "The Girl who wanted to be God". It originally appeared in Pc Gamer UK nr. 165, but is now free for all on

You'd think such a fan of SHODAN would write her name properly.

He does in some parts. Typing it in all caps is simply a pain.

And know a bit more about Cyberpunk history

(And, in passing, it's interesting to note that the same green streams of binary graphic effect as the Matrix opens Shock 2, except two years earlier.)
Ghost in the Shell, 1995
Also, was SHODAN processing component 43893 the whole system as Mr. GIllen seems to imply, or merely that part of Her which happened to be sitting in Beta grove at the time?
ZylonBane on 23/8/2006 at 04:12
Yah, the bit of SHODAN that crashed on Tau Ceti V was just a processing node that happened to be located in Beta Grove. The bulk of her was up on the bridge.

I can't read the page, says: "Precondition Failed"
Obviously they don't accept anyone on the intarweb anymore... :(

I'm really glad to finally be able to read this article. There's absolutely no way to get the mag where I am, so I was curious about it. I wish he could've gotten them to let him give scans, like he did with the Cradle article.

It does have a "raw copy" proviso at the top.
I'd have to check how it was written in the magazine. I dare say it was Shodan out of basic aesthetics though.

Mea Culpa on forgetting they did it too - though, to be honest, I have tried my hardest to forget everything about Ghost In The Shell, the piece of shitty bobbins that it is. Though in my defence, I didn't actually say SS2
originated it either, just noted in passing it was playing with similar imagery before the Matrix did.
Re: Processing unit. Didn't really mean any more than "Shodan ended up on Tau Ceti".

Good article, although I wouldn't mind seeing a SystemShock3 where Shodan ends up winning and wiping out humanity. That could be fun.
(I don't see what's wrong with Shodan, I mean how many people write LASER anymore?)

From the article:
"Meat? Bone? Panting? Sweating? Even “running through my corridors”. Listen to the theatrical voluptuousness of the performance. We don’t have to draw many diagrams to stress what she’s actually talking about."
Never thought about it that way. Disturbing, if you do....
