Man, after reading the first page of this thread I was SO ready to jump on people for jumping on Kolya - not because I agree with him (I don't) but because I've been victim of enough virtual lynchings to know that they suck ass, and, while perhaps fun for the lynchers, are the worst possible way to deal with the problem. It makes people defensive, which makes them A. more belligerent, a B. even less likely to give value to your words than if you phrased them in a more amiable manner.
Luckily, I jumped to the last page and saw that it had died down. Yay.

dude, you should totally get the Uncle Bacon account's name changed. Otherwise you won't get to play the vet card.

At the end of the day, we're all a bunch of regular people who turn off the screen and roll into bed. It's never smart to allow yourself to believe that our Internaut Personas are accurate nor complete representations of the people with the flesh and bone fingers typing on the page.
Says you! I haven't been regular in weeks, and I rarely sleep. I do agree that our internet selves are not complete representations, but neither are our fleshy selves. We think therefore we type, and what we type is what we think, much like what we say and do around our friends and family. Except around here we tend to say more than we would in the flesh, I'd bet money on that. So what I am saying is that we are sharing a part of ourselves to each other, a fair amount of each day, that we wouldn't even share with people in the flesh. What does it all mean? What the hell am I saying? I'm not sure. Maybe this forum is but one social circle that we all frequent, much like the pub social circle, the family social circle, and so it is important to some people to make others in this circle feel better whether they know them in person or not. Make sense? I didn't think so. No one ever tells off the drunk chick at the bar when she offers condolences for your loss, even though you see her there everyday but do not know her.
And as to accuracy: what could be more accurate than being able to express one's self to a multitude of people we will probably never meet in person, and yet we all say some silly shit that we would refrain from saying out in the public. Besides if typing words is not an accurate representation of ourselves and our thoughts, then all that intellectual property out there is all a bunch of bunk. An example: If you lie in person, you are probably just as likely to lie in type, or tell the truth etc.
P.S. Sorry if I didn't make sense, but at least my post count is up by one. :cheeky:

I have to agree with mxleader. With me, what you read is what you get... the whole neurotic, often-grouchy, emotionally fragile mess. I may fudge a few particulars here and there: for example, no-one needs to know exactly how tall I am (not very :( ), but the personality is what it seems. People who get online to deliberately behave in a fashion that isn't the way they really are (and would get them punched in the face) in real life are, in my opinion, fairly close to sociopaths. Why do you think people come here? Because this is one of the few internet communities where people are REAL. We don't have to dwell on this; it gets saccharine real quick. But let's not deny it, and deny what makes this place what it is.
edited: because second-guessing myself and inadvertantly making things worse is also a part of my true nature.

I think what GBM is trying to say, is that he isn't half as clever off the 'net.
Fingernail on 19/6/2007 at 16:50
No one's as clever off the net because they don't have google and wikipedia to check all their facts.

^ So true! :joke:
Also, in RealLife you don't have luxurious amounts of time to come up with a witty comment.
