The ironic thing is that this thread has turned into the very same chorus of redundant emotionalism that Kolya's original post was criticising.

Well, I skimmed over all the posts. What a pointless thread. It serves no purpose other than to point out the original posters ignorance on completely healthy and human behavior.
My father died back in December. I had support from friends both in real life and virtual. I was extremely thankful for EVERY word that was spoken to me, whether it was one line...or half a page. All I needed during that time, was a connection to reality, a connection to other people. It keeps you grounded during some of the most turbulent periods a person is likely to experience. If somebody has lost someone, or even if they can imagine what it is like to lose someone...then "I'm sorry for your loss", are far more than just words. They echo a feeling of empathy towards your pain. This is especially true for someone who has lost someone, they truly know what the other person is going to face in the coming months.
As for me, I'm thankful for every single word that was typed in my direction. I watched my father take his last breath, I held his hand through his final moments on this planet. I needed every ounce of support I could get after that experience, and I actually ended up making a new friend out of it. We chat and go out for lunch on a regular basis now.
There is great value, in EVERY level of empathy.

RBJ - My thoughts are with you and your family during this time of empathy for LF's ill-conceived post expressing concern over Shug's apology for bashing Kolya for his criticism of insincere condolences. I can't imagine how you must be feeling right now.
Clearly it's going to take us all some time to work through this great communal tragedy, and I for one intend to stand firm alongside you all who are closer than any RL family could ever be. We will survive, but we must join together in the mutual bonds of cynicism, mockery, and amateur pornography - the three pillars that have always held this community together.
Let us not waver during this test of strength. We shall overcome this trial.

It's always interesting to see people posting in a thread just to say it's pointless or boring.
