Actually, in no way do I want to restrain GBM's enthusiasm for the unknown, and I even agree with him to a point--I don't believe in ghosts but dear god do I believe in ghosts during the middle of a good ghost story, for example--and I'd love to exist in a universe in which freaky shit is bubbling just out of sight under the surface.

The world is a weird and wonderful place. But since I don't believe in second chances either, I prefer taking a couple of moments to separate the bullshit from the genuine article. No points for that after you die, I know, but the less time we collectively waste on things that have nothing to support them the more we have for delving into the genuine mysteries of the world. Which might even lead us somewhere usueful while we're alive.

At the atomic level everything is just attaction and repulsion of various bits of energy wave functions with nothing we think of as solid. That is pretty damn freaky all on it's own.
