Well I've played both BG and BG2...I never actually completed BG, but it was OK while I was playing it. BG2 was better because it had more going on and perhaps more importantly was high enough level for you to have some goodies and powers.
I prefer U7:SI still, though. The Ultima universe seemed to exist in a happy medium between the too-cute, linear, simple Japanese RPGs and the grim, gritty, stat-driven worlds of many American ones. BG is definitely on the gritty side.
I'm almost finished playing through Thief Gold (already finished TDP twice or thrice). BG2 was the last RPG I've played, and I recommend it, esp. given the shortage of 3D RPGs. I think SS2 was somewhat a 3D RPG, but it still really had the soul of an FPS. The distinction is whether the plot explains your actions, or causes them. In an FPS, the story is an excuse for why you are running around shooting stuff. In an RPG, you shoot because of the story (and hopefully you can do other things beside shoot).

BG in this context would mean Baldur's Gate, I do believe.

I really should rename this the Baldur's Gate 2 winge thread. I just have to make a few more points about it.
1) The path-finding abilities of the AI in your party would have trouble navigating their way around your average macdonalds restaurant. ( you have to make small clicks for them to behave properly and even then...)
2) The 2d artwork is beautiful though entirely unbelievable. It often looks more like a collage and doesn't promote the idea of wanting to explore it.
3) Conversations are often not updated after you've completed an event. In other words you go back to a person after completing a quest (such as the boy from the Umar hills) and they still act like you haven't done it yet.
4) Once again, very annoying voice acting at times. The sheer repitition of your parties comments can get really annoying. eg every 10 minutes or so you get Minsc with his tosser of a Hamster Boo interfere with the following dialog:
Minsc: ...Cover your nose Boo. We will leave no crevice untouched.
Boo: Squeek, squeek, squeek.
Well, Im still enjoying it anyway, but it definitely won't go down as one of the classics. As far as RPGs go, theres been a bit of a void for me since the Ultima's and the Underworlds. I've enjoyed some others but they still haven't come anywhere near as close to the standards of the aforementioned RPGs.
Any suggestions as to a good RPG?

Yeah System Shock 2 was really good, apart from the cutscenes. I'll have to look into fallout
