Or draw 2 versions of each face, one seen from the right and one from the left, then code some fancy script that detects the angle of the character's head from the players point of view and switches the face textures accordingly.

Might get a bit janky if you ever see the transition.

The answer is obvious: make it so it's like one of those optical illusions where a face is painted on a concave surface and the eyes seem to follow you. Like so:

Simple enough, isn't it? :p

It looks fantastic Koob.

(fun side fact: I actually emailed Brendon Chung early in development telling him he's a big inspiration and asking for some tips!)
That wont' exactly help your case for not being a "lazy ripoff." :ebil: Just sayin!
So, did he respond? (Brendon) If so, what did he say?

Damn, you're looking for 3d artist, and I guess I might fit in with my skills (I should have made that portfolio sooner, dammit). But I'm using 3dsmax instead of Blender, and worked mostly with UDK and Unreal engine editions. Guess I'll have to learn basic Max to Unity workflow.

The effect is amplified by some of the noses pointing to the left while others point to the right.
This is clearly an indication on who can be trusted. Those who have good intentions have noses pointing to the right, dodgy characters have noses pointing to the left.
Just like in real life.

I actually deliberately did not do straight-on noses because then I thought the faces would look TOO much like Blendo's. But now that you mention it you're right, they do look weird.
Looking at the Steam comments, it's interesting yet unsurprising that ALL the negative feedback is ONLY the artstyle, particularly the blocky characters. The positive comments are both art and gameplay depicted. But the graphics alone seem to be enough to downvote it quite a bit so far.
I'm really torn about that. To be perfectly honest, crap textures aside, I really like the character models and the style (particularly (
http://unboundcreations.com/images/karaski/promo/karaski-rpg-game-4-complex-conversation.jpg) this screenshot). and actually spent a good amount experimenting with the right shapes and proportions to get what I thought felt balanced (definitely more than just "olololol ripoff 30 flights"). That the response is soo negative is pretty disheartening :/ Maybe I've just been stuck in tunnel vision for too long. I want to stick to them but I guess I will see how it goes. And what the eventual artist has to say.
(In my defense, tho, I would say that even if people dislike the style and it definitely needs refining, at least I feel the game HAS a style, unlike the typical greenlight identical RPGMaker clones, cellshaded platformers and default-unity-generic-semi-realistic-shaders fair.)

Hmm, interesting. See, I was looking at it more as acknowledging my references and paying due homage to my inspirations. But maybe you're right and I should be careful what i say... it is the internet after all.
And he did email me back with a brief outline of his creative process, which was nice.

Aww bummer. Yea I want to keep it in Blender to keep it consistent with all existing assets + be able to tweak them myself or pass it on to the next person in case the artist can't continue working.
Well if you do decide to learn Blender and have time in coming months (
karaski.com/jobs) fill out an application :)

So alpha testing next month eh? Looking forward to it! :)
