Just to remind you all. Thief 1's E3 trailer. Compare it to the Thief 4 trailers. - by SubJeff

You're not paying attention. Read Infinitron's posts and then watch the first 20 seconds of your trailer again. Then report back here.

What is your point Brethren? That a minimalist shoot-em-up (but look ma! bow, not gun!) is better then a real thief game with a few extraneous elements?
I don't agree.

Brethren and Melan - can you really, honestly, not see my point?
I can see it, but I don't think it is a very good point. Let's subtract the actiony focus from the gameplay trailer. We still have a game that's heavy on the interface (TDP was a triumph of minimalism here), has dubious mechanics (again, points for headshots? 3rd person?), bland aesthetics and (okay, this may be jumping to conclusions) overly gameplay-centric architecture. I wouldn't have a problem if they showed off the combat, but this trailer sends up too many red flags in areas which should be taken as representative of the full game experience.
Neat mantling, though.

The original trailer is an obvious attempt to show people that LGS is toning things way down -
skill, the dark, no rocket launcher, etc. It was still the original first-person sneaker, and it was innovative. There's 10 seconds of gameplay that shows Garrett shooting 2-3 arrows, which was still downright peaceful compared to other games of the time. But like someone else said, it's an E3 trailer, there has to be
some action. You didn't want to put people to sleep.
Fast forward 15 years. Stealth games are almost common, and Thief is the granddaddy. And what do we get? Escalated violence (among a bunch of other stuff). Thief trailers and gameplay videos showing an equal parts stealth/action approach. Garrett is punching, headshotting, and attacking multiple guards, sometimes in slow motion and using super powers.
My point? You can't compare these two videos. They are from completely different eras, and with all sorts of different expectations. To say one does or does not justify or legitimize the other is ridiculous.

Well you say the mantling is neat now but elsewhere all you do is moan.
The fact is TDP's trailer made it look really actiony and it isn't at all. Thief 4's trailer focuses a lot on the stealth elements. Given that E3 vids usually show bits of games that are meant to be attention grabbing and which don't necessarily reflect what the game will be like moaning about the Thief 4 trailers seems almost hypocritical. Its definitely stupid.
I'm not saying this looks great, but it does look like a Thief game.

I half agree with this. EM don't have to deal with introducing a completely new style of gameplay the way LGS did. Nonetheless, it is still true that E3 videos are more action-orientated then the underlying games. In our case, we have the presenters explicitly saying that the video is more action-orientated then the game.

Just to inform all you ignoramuses, Eidos's Marketing department chose the content of the trailers, not the devs. Also, go in-game and replicate what you see. Try it.

Wow, what a genius! We never thought of that!
Good thing publishers never have anything to do with promotional materiel nowadays.
