This is part of the newpaper article that I was refering too earlier, located in the templar level. It's in one of the rooms adjacent to the bridge that the military bot patrols under, on the side with the stairs. So by that point a week has gone by.

Last week can mean yesterday.
:)

This is true, but it gives you a little more breathing room when attempting to fit all of the events of DX into a time span when that time span is more than a day long.

Zaccheus, have you tried moving poisonous gas and yellow explosive barrels about in tandem locations to create domino effect explosions/gaseous clouds? After the
Generator level, I think I only used one bullet total to get from the roof to the bottom floor. Once the barrels below got lit up (along with strategically placed LAMs at stairwells, everyone was out in about 15 seconds.
Glad to see you enjoying this AWESOME game. When you reach the end, you'll feel like you actually saved the world.

:) In fact I am almost sure that Deus Ex starts on either a Friday or Saturday, so by that time last week would be around yesterday.

The entire before HK section took place in one night, from the NSF HQ to Tong's base was 16 hours, from the 747 to the last Tongs base was about 24 hours (less.) It seems a bit off to me to say that from there, after a quick stop in New York, Paris would be many days away.
Alneyan on 22/8/2003 at 16:04
The newspaper you are talking of can also be read in Hong Kong. (Or it is a slightly different article at least) Since there is less than a day between the 747 and Hong Kong, as Chris pointed out, you could safely guess that there was only a few hours before the 747. It would then mean that the beginning of the game and the late Hong Kong are only separated by two days, if you take into account the time difference between the East Coast and China. (16 hours?) If the events on Liberty Island actually occured a day before the publication of this newspaper, then it would have been easier to simply write "yesterday", but who knows? ;)
And after that, do you truly believe JC, after what occured in Hong Kong, would simply wait for his enemies to get ready for his next move? The total lenght of the game must be somewhere around four days or so. Speaking of time, why all missions (as far as I recall) take place during the night? If JC was given the choice, it would be more logical to... well, work during the night, but it is not the case. Or maybe he is willing to wait for a few hours to have the best conditions available?
For the pace, I will have to say I find the game to become less interesting after Hong Kong/Paris, it depends on your tastes. (I did find Paris quite enjoyable the first time) It won't be a bad thing if Deus Ex 2 is slightly less long, but gives you more alternatives.

I actually find the beginning of the game [and hong kong especially] very tedious. With the beginning of the game, its non lethal stealth or you get it in the neck from your comrades and brother, and get your arse chewed by the enemy.
Alneyan on 22/8/2003 at 17:52
Why would you feel obliged to play with a non lethal approach in the beginning? Sure, your brother and Carter won't like to see you shooting everything moving, but you will earn the admiration of Anna Navarre, Gunther among other ones.
Yes, you won't have any criticism from Gunther, rather than praise, but I guess it is impressive given his grimly mood. And of course, this kind of... admiration is rather questionable :p

Yes, but there is flight time (the main thing I'm considering) and from Tong's base, you have flight time to NY, then from NY to Paris. Along with later having flight time from Paris to the USA west coast, to several different loacations there, and then to
nevada
, there is a whole lot of commute time. Added to total game time (again I average about 20 hours a game) and you've got a couple days on you hands. Maybe only 4 like Alneyan said, but it seems to fit better than 1 or 2. Essentially I'm just trying to point out that it's a less constrained time period than a day, and I'm citing stuff from the game and figuring what happens during loading screens to have it all be a little longer (and in my own mind a little more epic) than a single day. It's kinda weird though how little JC sleeps. You'd think that sometime between missions he'd catch some shut eye, but his only oppurtunity to do so is on Jock's helecopter. I think it would have been more fitting if like, in HK he slept between his two attacks on Versalife, but since it's a first person game, I supose there's no way of showing this too easily (like there is in party-based RPG's where you just spend a night at the local Inn).
Then again I've been awake for *checks clock* 38 hours.... so I suppose lack of lseep isn't really a big deal...

I played the single player through in a week...really interesting and fascinating, probably the best sp I've played. Before that I had played the DX Multiplayer for 1½ years...that's DX at its best, seriously. It's not easily comparable to the Single player because your opponents are real individuals who use master tactics and can variate beyond AI, it's something you need to experience yourself.
Some people say that it's stupid because you can't use stealth tactics and that DX doesn't apply well as a multiplayer game etc...but that's just 'noob' talk by people who haven't played the game long enough to get some basic skill and see the depth of the gameplay. In fact, the whole multiplayer scene is affected by the style people choose to play, which augmentations they use. Some people prefer the silent cloaker style, some like the brute force vision rifle style, some uses knives...different augmentations more or less counter different weapons and each other with certain typical advantages and disadvantages and it all depends on what you like but the fun of it lies in mastering the very style of playing, the guns you like and the combination of augmentations that you use against other people. Combining all these with traits and personalities of different people it creates the most profound multiplayer game I have ever played and experienced and that is a lot. Even though the code is buggy the idea is genius and I can only hope that DX2 will have a better, less buggy and more carefully coded MP patch...not to mention the possibility of having MP included.
DXMP today suffers from lack of good servers...but there are still people who keep playing after 3 years. If you want to experience Deus Ex at its highest level...try the multiplayer and give it some time...2 weeks should be enough to learn the basics, after that the genius of it only gradually begins to unravel before you. I believe that not even the makers of this game completely understand the potential that it has.
