I've been playing Thief for a few years now, and lots of taffers told me to try DX.
:)
I've just completed the training, and I absolutely love the game!
:D
Not having a visibility meter is a bit strange, but apart from that I'm having great fun.

Enjoy! :D Deus Ex is awesome. It certainly has its flaws (which I'm sure you'll discover, not the least of which being the stealth elements), but it's well worth the trip.
Keep posting your experiences / thoughts as you play; it'll give this forum a little excitement.

Have you found the secret room in the training? ;)

No, but then I never looked for the Bow Upgrade in Thief, either.
;)

;) I have yet to find the bow upgrade in Thief, but soon it'll be mine.
But in Deus Ex, there's truly
truly an hidden room in the training mission. No kidding.

Now, you know this means we want up-to-date posts on your experiences. :p
Oh, and there really is a secret room in training. My advice is not to bother about it! Just play the first time through however feels most natural to you. You'll be coming back to the game ... I assure you ...

I've got the SoldOut edition ("Game of teh Year"), so I've printed off the manual (PDF) and will be studying that.
I'm also gonna go through training again, and try the mine climbing trick, practice guard avoiding (stealth training) and have some fun with the robot before getting into the game's missions.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Good Luck. I was in the same situation a few years ago - avid Thief player who heard all the stuff about DX and bought it. It's not quite the same experience as Thief - apart from the obvious difference in setting, it's gameplay is also slightly different. It's possible to play Thiefy, but it is rather difficult sometimes with no lightgem. Anyway, as I played it, it grew on me. Now I've played it several times with different character styles, and it's right up there with the Thief series at the top of my personal Best Games Ever. I hope you enjoy it.
Also, a piece of advice. Try not to read to much in this forum, and especially don't go into the Hints and Spoiler or DeusEx2 forums unless absolutely nessecary, and try and avoid DX discussion in general. Your experience with any game can be significantly soured if you know too much before you play. This is especially true of Deus Ex. There's a lot to discover, but it's much more enjoyable to discover it on your own.

Oh, and about the lightgem. About a year before they released the full mod, the folks at ThieveryUT released a mutator (mini-mod) for UT that added a lightgem, making you invisible in darkness etc. Some resourceful individuals decided to port this mutator to DX. I haven't tried it myself, but you might want to check it out. Find out more (
