Hey all.
With DX2 around the corner, i decided to go back and replay DX1. Lost my CD, but grabbed one off of eBay for $1+s&h. Got it, but it says on the top left 'Special Limited Edition'. Is this just a 3-mish version or shortened in anyway, or is it the real deal? Am I screwed?
Thanks

It's not the real deal. It's an elaborate demo of the game that was sold by a chain, IIRC.

Yea too bad man :(. Well hopefully you liked the game.. go out and buy the full version, its rather a bargain (in bargain bin too :erm: ) at your local software story

Finally taking the plunge from SS and Thief to DX. I've seen the "Game of the Year" Edition, would that be my best bet? And, what's the difference between the original release and that "GotY" edition, anyway?

Yes, get the GOTY edition. It is fully patched (Don't let version numbers decieve you). It also has a newspaper page. The manual and newspaper page are in PDF files on the CD, in the Sold Out Software distributions. On the CD is also an alternative version of the manual.
The GOTY edition is supposed to come with an additional audio CD of re-done versions of the music, but the SOS distros don't include it.
One last thing: SOS insists on putting its stupid frontend program on the CD. They even have some stupid bullshit "SoNow technology" logo on the back. Oh wow! A fucking frontend that wastes your time before getting to the ACTUAL installer! The wonders of technology! Even better is that it loads when you put the CD in the drive, even after installing the game, wasting even more time as you wait for the frontend to load.
Just hold down shift to disable the autoloading, use the Explore function to browse the CD, and run the real installer.
Oh yeah, and as I recall, their version of Thief does not come with a patch, even though they say in the readme on the CD that it does. Incidentally, whenever I've applied the 1.33 patch for Thief, in training the guards in the shadow and silence training rooms don't react, even if I run around in the light or tap dance on the metal floor. Does this affect the rest of the game, in even the slightest way, shape, or form?
