I think the secret to secret murder is more that nobody has seen you in a while... I've managed to kill the gateguard with a silences sniper rifle from one of the towers near the gate and nobody reacted to it because they hadn't seen me.
But it's very difficult to say when somebody has seen you or hasn't seen you...

Yep, I used the method for killing too.

When the Dutileer exo-brigade jump those freedom guys, afterwards I quite like how the english in the text is a bit vague so it's hard to tell if you're picking the right answer and you can get yourself in shit quite easily.
I've never managed to get the sniper mission done for Skull as the moment I accept the mission the sniper opens fire and generally gets him in the face right in front of me. Sometimes he doesn't die, but if I follow through and shoot the sniper usually when I go back for the next step I find he's taken Skull out and the rest of them are sitting around sharing stories and playing the guitar.
Regarding the OP; I agree. The only place I've seen this sort of complex array of options was in Invisible War and that's only in the Seattle section (where you get competing and conflicting robbery and assasination missions and get to see how many of them you can complete and play off against each other for the most money and toys).

It might have been because I played it without the patch. But I took advantage of some holes in the AI with missions like these.
Id stay just out of sight where nobody could see me. something even as simple as just over the crest of a hill and i'd head shot the guy with a silenced weapon and, well it was kind of dumb because he'd fall dead and nobody would notice... like ever...
but meh. it worked.
I should play through stalker again.
I'm working on a source mod that features DX/SS/Stalker style game play. We're going to announce on january first (i think) So im going back and playing DX 1 and 2 and Stalker to analyze them in ways i hadn't when I played them the first..... er... ten times i played through them ;P

They're pretty good now and generally freak out at the sight of a corpse and head straight for cover (this has interesting effects when guys fall into the fire on level loads).
Anyway; amusing anecdote and something I've never seen before.
I've been using an old save and wandered back from Pripyat to take odd jobs and generally muck around. I got asked to go over to Agroprom Research Institude and help out the stalkers camping there (they're always being attacked by the military and bandits from the underground and at this point in the game there's a lot of wildlife as well).
I've gotten tired of seeing these guys get killed or hurt most of the times I've been through there, so I decide to bring them some guns. Not just any guns. Some GP 37s to replace those pathetic pistols and shotguns and save on my medkits.
So after fighting off the army and the bandits I set about talking to these guys and trying to give them these guns (my one friend there was killed in the conflict). But these anorak-wearing fools don't want them! I don't know why, but I keep chucking these nice rifles at them and nothing happens.
So I'm stand on the stairs with the guy guarding it , trying to pass him the gun and all he does is point his pistol at me. Then I hear the gurgle of a bloodsucker that has come out of the underground. I 'say' to the guy "You're going to be sorry when that gets here!. I'm going up on the roof now. Bye!".
I get up there just in time to hear the bloodsucker snarl and get aggressive and see the guy drop his shit and run, screaming "AAH! Bama Gijeh! Bama Gijeh!" (Sorry, I don't know what those words actually are). He then ends up in a ludicrously long chase with the bloodsucker, running right around the outside wall of the complex, running faster than I've ever seen a human move in the game (and the bloodsucker is having trouble getting him!), screaming those words the whole time. It was absolutely hilarious.
I think eventually some pseudodogs or an anomaly got him. I don't know, I was laughing too much to notice and hearing only Benny Hill-chase music.

Ahhh, the joys of unscripted gameplay...

That's pomogite [pama'gitie], i.e. "help!" :)

Wow, I think I've only heard them screaming for help when they're lying down and want a medkit. But anyway, if the guy is refusing a fully loaded GP-37, then he deserves to be chased by a Bloodsucker.
