Alright, so I recently found Arx Fatalis and got it. Ran through a little bit of the beginning tutorial and a few question come to mind. Sorry if they sound stupid, never got the manual.
1)I know i need to install the texture zip file in the forums to get rid of the "white" look, but I examined my Arx Fatalis directory and there is no Graph directory within it, just misc and save.
2)What is the best character for a beginner? mage, thief, or fighter? Do I miss out on much by choosing one and not another?
3)why does punching seem to do more damage then dagger(2 punched kill a rat, 6 dagger strikes to kill a rat)? Does one charge faster than the others?
4)I noticed when crouch is toggles, a white icon in the bottom left of the screen fades in and out. Does this tell me how well I am hiding? Is seeing it better than not, or vice versa?
5) Is magic always going to be a pain? It takes me about five or six trys to get the second rune of the ignite spell to work, even though it seems easy.
6) Is there a way to block attacks before you get a shield(or even afterwards)?
Yah...that's all that comes to mind right now. Otherwise the game looks promising, though I wish there were more head varieties, and the guy didn't look so anorexic in the beginning. Any help on the above will be appreciated.

I don't know ALL answers, but I'll try what I can.
Thief is difficult when you are a n00b. I would go w/a Fighter that can cast a few spells. Also, yes, that 'crouch light' is a stealth indicator, and iirc, and works somewhat like Oblivion's.You WILL get better at magic.....at least that's what they kept telling me. I suck at it, and never got better. Thing is, you can "pre-cast" spells (3 to be exact), and assign them to a hotkey. That's handy, as you aren't fumbling w/them in combat and whatnot./ I think you hold shift while you cast it or something. I forget.
Anyway, enjoy!! Great RPG. Let us know what you think, and tell us some stories(it;s been slow in here lately :erg: )

* You can go ahead and create that directory as Arx will look there first before it's corresponding "internal" file.
* Probably a fighter with some magic abilities, but at the end of the day, experimenting is all part of the fun.
* Hmnn...not too sure about that one. Perhaps you've got more unarmed skill at present.
* It should look like a little man, but not white or really down the bottom.
* Practice. Try and keep your wrist and forearm slightly stiff when you perform casting.
As far as the look of available Avatar's is concerned, I don't think anyone was that impressed. Good thing the game is in first-person :)

the trick to the magic is the 'angles', you only have to draw the figure paying attention to the 'angles', the size does not matter, it is the angles... and you'll become good at it and be able to cast spells 'onfly' :cheeky:

About the damage, there is a large random factor. I know that punching does the least damage in melee. What probably happened to you is that you randomly got six very low damage hits with your dagger, but two very high damage hits with your fist. There are text indicators when you get double damage, but when you deal no damage you must look for the spark visual.
As for the best class to play, it is mage. My first three or four times through the game, I used a combination of warrior and mage, but lately I've been using a near-total warrior. You simply cannot win the game as a pure Thief, as you are forced to fight things (forced as in trapped in small rooms with them) which will mop the floor without if you do not have very high levels of either melee or magic.
If you choose warrior, know that there is some skill involved with the swordplay, though it is annoying and not nearly as natural as Thief's. What you must do is turn around quickly and run away from them right before they strike. Backpedalling simply won't do; if you try that it will be a blow trading slugfest. But you can, theoretically, go throughout the game as a melee fighter without being hit if your reflexes are good enough (assuming you never made a mistake). It's not like Mechwarrior or something where you will get hit even if you do everything perfectly and are the luckiest of men.
There are, however, one or two rather rare creatures (like the end level boss) who will hit you no matter how good you are due to their reach and behavior. So it's best to have a high constitution as well as strength. In fact, after a certain point (perhaps level fifteen), it's best to ignore strength and focus on constitution. By the end of the game, your constitution should be your highest attribute if you are playing a warrior.
