Found DX:IW in the cheap games bin at the store and decided to pick it up. Just finished it today. Overall it's not a very good game, there's hints of a good game, but it's too often hampered by terrible level design. The antarctica levels are pretty fun, and parts of Blackgate were too.
I patched the game and I still ran into a few bugs/quirks that were very irriatating. For one, sometimes I couldn't pick up multi-tools even though I only had less than the maximium in my inventory. Also the jumping physics were completely out of wack, I would try to mantle something fall down just again and end up 30 feet in the air. Very strange. Also the crosshair sucked, it basically rendered the magrail useless unless I was real close beacuse it was impossible to aim with any precision. Maybe there was an option to change the crosshairs that I just missed. Also it was way too easy to max out your bio mods early in the game, I was pretty much set for bio mods by the time I left Cario the first time.
Another thing that bothered me was the way Chad acted, it seemed a little out of character for him to be portraying JC as the root of all evil seeing how JC saved his butt in the first game. Although maybe it's just a case of using old characters for the sequel just because they're "familiar"
I originally went for the Omar ending as it was the most fun to play through. All the endings were a nice way of wrapping up the game and I feel like that was one part of the game that surpassed the original. The final levels being Liberty Island again was a nice touch, although it was a shame to seem them miniaturized, especially embarrassing was the small size of the statue room.
It might seem like I'm being overly harsh about the game, but it mostly stems from disappointment on how it failed in every way to meet the standards created by the first game. I think the game suffered greatly from Ion Storm not knowing how to develop a game for mulitple platforms. Overall the game was worth the 6 dollars I spent on it, but I don't see myself ever wanting to replay it like I do with the original.

I agree with everything there.
I think the MagRail has a maximum range, which can be extended with a weapon mod. The only time I missed with it was from long distance.
I also think the only reason they used Chad instead of Everett was so that they could use Nicolette more easily, but I have an idea on how this could be different:
Everett kills Chad, or finds his corpse if JC did it. (I did.) He then tells Nicolette that JC killed Chad and becomes a father figure to her.
But then it would be obvious to DX players that WTO was the Illuminati.

the maximum range might be part of it, but when I aimed long distance in a tight space where it was harder to "miss" I had a lot easier time killing people so I'm inclined to believe it's more of bad crosshairs than too far away.

Console-Itis, because the game was made to be played on a TV:mad: the interface is simplified, and the crosshair larger, same with that STUPID damage pooling, what happend to location damage?
The inventory was "Dumbed" down for console (i.e. made easier to operate with a thumbstick), the augs where FAR to common early on, but that could have been rectified by keeping the NUMBER of aug slots from the original, three augs per slot WTF?
Furthermore what happened to typing in codes, I LOVE doing that on my numpad, makes you feel elite :D and you can guess the smaller ones.
Personally: Microsofts involvement it the development process made this game less than DX, the story was :eww: I cared for NONE of the characters.
Further rants to come.

What was Microsoft's involvement? The X Box?
Whisperblade on 17/7/2006 at 05:53
Yes. Exactly, so Microsoft made sure that the project was easily better for the console and didn't give half a shit for the PC, so the entire project was really just ported to PC.
Which is stupid.
Didn't you know about MS's involvement?
AxTng1 on 17/7/2006 at 12:11
Is this the same involvement that asian gangsters have in the UK computer market?

*sigh*
When a company like Microsoft sign over a deal for something like IW, they gain a certain degree of power into how the game is developed, so that its made in their best interest, thats why IW was so console-tastic, because Microsoft was focussing on their console market.
Seriously kids, basic buisness tatic. :thumb:

Only problem with that explanation is that it wasn't great on the xbox either. The loading times are really annoying, especially playing through it for the second time, and the inventory was just stupid. It can't just be that it was on a console- there are plenty of first person games on xbox with bigger areas and unobtrusive loading times.
And I actually liked the game

Did microsoft actually have to sign any kind of deal though?
Eidos might have needed to get it past a "suitable contents/performce" test or something, and Ion will have needed at some point to get an Xbox dev-kit, but I don't think Microsoft had anything to do with the game's design (platform liscense limitations aside, which is just things like HUD sizes/placements and save mechanics and Live requirements from what I know, rather than any strict content limitations).
It's not on any other consoles because they didn't have the memory required to get the engine running. I might be wrong, but I don't think there was even an exclusivity deal.
Sure the game suffered some through having to be curtailed to fit in the Xbox's memory, but that's the limit of Microsoft's involvement - not making a bigger console.
(feel free to prove me wrong: this is just my understanding of the events)
