I had that problem too at first, have you tried crouching while fighting small enemies? It works great. :)

I do- except for Turrets, bots and droids. They all go boom when I kill them, and I get damaged when they die.
The turrets and bots you can pound until they're almost dead, then just back off to a safe distance and plant a bullet in them. Works like a charm; you can walk away without a scratch, usually. As for the protocol droids, I usually just blast them with the shotgun if I'm not playing melee-only. If I am, I just dodge them; check out (

Don't forget that you need to disable security before bashing the turrets, or strafe around them while swinging and then run away when their health is low enough.
Killing droids and bots is easy, you just need to use the corner-trick on the droids and simply run to the bots and bash them until they explode. With armor you can afford losing a few HPs.

Kind of difficult to disable security, I chose "marine" as my first pick on hard. Went with +2 strength, +1 agi and +1 cyb, and +1 maintenance. I'm about 2/3 the way through hydroponics now and hve only just put some points into hack. I spent most of my cyber modules thus far on additional strength for wacking things, additional standard for shooting things and additional maintenance for keeping things working. :p

Ah, it feels kind of wierd that hundreds of years in the future, long after the demise of pikes and swords the wrench is the ultimate superweapon. Hmmh. Well, I found an assault rifle on Hydro- I'll put some points into standard and see if it works better.
Hydro was creepy- the ghost of the person who is being forced to change into a midwife really shook me. Oh well, a bit more and I'll be on deck to meet with bossy Polito.

I'm so used to playing SS2 melee-only that I forget that not all people play it that way. Hacking is a very helpful upgrade on melee-onlys.

Understatement of the Year! ;)

In other words; upgrading to Standard 6 is worth it. :p

Though you might want to avoid it to be honest. The Assault Rifle is *too* good. You might have a more challenging (and "exotic") first play through if you steer clear of the AR.

I had the AR on my first runthrough and I thought the BotM was bloody hard none the less. :o

Really? Once I got to grips with rec, I found the game to be a bit of a walk-over.
Still, each to their own :) Perhaps I was playing on easy or something.
